Yeah, I have a picture some where of the TRD 8", an 8.4" and the older Toyota 8" ring gears stacked and they are all the same size. We measured them with calipers to confirm it.

Yea but the pre tacoma v6 3rds don't have the habitual problems of popping gears like the 2nd gen TRD rear's do and they are missing the girdle.
I proposed that perhaps there was a MFR defect on the 2nd gen tacos, or the fact that the 4.0 coupled with a heavy ass truck causes the problems seen with those 3rds, and i was labelled a heretic by Tacoma World, i think i lacked credibility since i don't have a satoshi, 40" LED light bar and a roof rack.

^^^This is my thought! I think Toyota fucked up making the 2nd gen TRD ring and pinions... I killed 2 of them way too easily...

My Nitro 4.88's from ECGS lasted me longer than my first 2 Toyota 3.73's combined!

I think I'll chalk up my 4.88's to hard abuse... I wrecked everything on my 3.73's. My 4.88's only lost 3 teeth on the ring gear and the pinion was fine. That's a good indicator that I shock loaded it at some point. Probably out at the dunes...

That's the other part of it, people beat the shit out of their trucks and its the parts fault, not saying that's you lol. Yes crawling stuff at idle, winching, or bypassing things you should not be on makes for boring pics and stories, but so does trail wrenching which SUCKS.

Ok just to clarify on some points, I have a 1 piece rear drive shaft. And unfortunately I'm pretty sure the adapter is TG and I know it is all 21 spline. I have a w56, not a tacoma tranny.

What issue would their be running a 14 bolt with the fj60 other than width and gearing?

Also I just found a d60/d70 combo setup for 3 link and 4 link. Pros and cons for the 70 vs 14 bolt?

    Yeah it does!

Rear driveshaft is fine, shorten or lengthen as you need to. Are the cases stuffed with stock gears or 4.7s? Match everything if you want the same ratio and go 23 spline.

No issues with a 14 bolt. Arguably the strongest cheapest rear axle you can buy. The front axle doesn't care what rear axle you have :p D70 and 14 bolt are similar in size and strength but you'll get lower (numerically higher) gearing options with the 70.

14 bolt is easier to setup gears. You can pick up axle shafts for 15 to 30 a piece at most junk yards. Super easy to swap to disks. Can shave to gain another 1.75'' of clearance.

My cases are 2.28 in the front and 4.70 in the rear.

So the only difference would be a slight difference in strength and different gearing options? I wouldn't go any deeper than 5.38. I don't need 7.17 haha, I'd still like to be able to drive on the highway.

    Here's the axles I found:

    http://www.nc4x4.com/forum/threads/full-1ton-buggy-part-out-cash-or-trades.161582/

Looks like they are stock besides the gears and covers.

14bolts are the shit. If you find a c&c one it will be the same width as your front. I think you can swap the c&c hubs on a srw one to narrow it as well. I was building one to swap into a jeep that I ended up selling. I was going to swap a 60 into it, then saw the 14bolt parts compared to the 60s and realised where the beef really was. My friend has one in his heep that he shaved down and it has more clearence under the diff than a d44 and he didn't even shave the ring gear. The 14 bolt also has the pinion support bearing to stop gear deflection,60s don't have that.

This is true. 14 bolts have a dropout pinion so they are way stronger than 60 or 70s in the rear. The D70 does have a huge pinion though.

So basically I'm getting that I should do it right the first time and go 14 bolt..

With either axle you will be fine in the strength department. But for clearance, cost, and ease of setup the 14 bolt wins.

Even with shipping costs, I'm sure they will go quickly in the buy/sell/trade section. Or send em to me so I can have 4 1/2 of them! :luvya:

You should be able to sell those easy out there. I have had one for sale for 4yrs now, but not too many tacomas here in the midwest, and even fewer that are wheeled, and even FEWER that have the need for a replacement case lol! All the people i see that need them are on the west coast.
