forgot hydro assist and wheels/tires :D

    That's at least another 3 grand easily:eek:

And with big ass tires he will want something done at the transfer case. So add another couple grand for duals or lefty.

10grand budget might not be enough!

I put 2g's in there for tires. Hydro assist isn't a must right away. That being said, I do enjoy having mine.

Ooopss...just saw that you added the tires on your previous post. My bad.

with 37"s and up...I would say hydro assist should be a priority. Just my opinion.

Yeah like i said price isnt a priority, building it right and strong and comfortable enough to drive across the country, wheel it, and be able to drive it back.

Then tons and 40’s if price isn’t a priority.

Tons and 40s or the custom housing with 9.5 in diffs and 80 outers and 40s. And a truck and a trailer :luvya:

Once you trailer your rig once. You'll be hooked. Used to daily mine 60 miles a day for about a year. Got a daily and started towing it to anything over a 100 miles away. Best thing ever. Nice to ride in something not loud and not having to worry about getting home after finishing the trail.

And price everything out and add a little to it cause they're will be unexpected costs.

    This.

I thoroughly enjoy the trailer life. I used to drive my truck everywhere and there is a beauty to just getting in the tow rig, setting the cruise at 75 and kicking back. No more packing the truck like you are playing Tetris to go camping either. Watch for the right deals and you can be into a good truck and trailer for sub $20k. My F-250 and PJ trailer was about $18k all said and done.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving my truck around town but every mod you do to make it better off road just makes it worse on road. Once you start this level of build, you go firmly down the rabbit hole of a hardcore wheeler.

tow rig + trailer would be nice.

But I can't even imagine dealing with maintenance for three different vehicles, plus insurance...plus I do not have a place to keep the tow rig/trailer:( Maybe one day....

Sounds like we are in the same place lol so your saying one tons and 40s is manageable on the highway for lengths of time, and you can still use the truck as a truck from time to time?

That's the most exciting part of wheeling! Listening for noises or doing that test drive of 35mph with a few full throttle assaults and deeming that new vibration normal, and heading home that's 8hrs away.

As much fun as that doesn't sound and the fact I finally got a good paying job I will pass on that haha can't afford to call in sick or miss days because of something like that. No need for 3 cars. Just the crawler and tow rig (dd) and the trailer. Been borrowing my dad's or buddies trailers lately but that'll be my next purchase probably before next fall. Plus 400 dollars a tire... I'll pass on all those road miles. And not much on maitence. Change the oil in the crawler twice a year or every 3000 miles and fix whatever needs fixed and just gas and oil changes for the tow rig right now. Will be getting a tranny flush at 65,000 miles just to be safe.

Thus driving creative fixes ! Or forcing to become an "expo" and pack a spare of every single part

I can relate to the throttle assaults....although helps when I unlock the hubs:anonymous:

Ha...the throttle assaults followed by a couple tugs on the wheel back and forth to make sure the steering is all still in order too.

Yes, absolutely. Mind you, I have a 4cyl. The truck is slower, so I am not able to drive fast on the highway like a maniac passing people around doing quick lane changes. If you can live with that, then you will be fine.

I do not drive it more often because the tires are too expensive to wear them out just driving around.

That's me!!! Minus the expo stigma, I just carry a ton of spares. Hell it's bailed out more of my friends than me.

I thought I had transfer case problems when I drove all the way home from the Badlands (3hrs on the highway) with the tcase screaming and running super hot.....

.....I forgot to take it out of 4wd and only unlocked the ADD....:anonymous: it was my first run out with triple sticks. They also broke that day on the first trail and I could only shift into low with a crowbar and a hammer hitting the linkage from under the truck.

Gotta remember that LC 80 axles are passenger drop front and rear. Also no real good high steer options except for hellfires.

If I were building Toyota axles for a tacoma I would start with front and rear LC 80 axles. For the front run either a 80 SF rear housing or a ruff stuff housing drivers drop for a 9.5" diff. Run a RHD steering arm with Y link TRE steering. Only downside to this is you have to either run SUA leafs or links. Rear just needs the brackets stripped and spring perches added unless you want to run a centered housing with custom shafts.

I am running this setup in my FJ40 build with a stock length inner on the long side and a +5 long field 30 spline inner on the short side (actually only 1 7/16 longer than stock, the +5 is for the entire axle width) which should be about 65.5" WMS, I am running an 80 SF housing flipped for passenger drop. Leafs SUA on all 4 corners until I can link the rear.

I will say it again that building a custom axle and running mini truck birfields or an 8" diff is a wasted opportunity, use 80 birfs and a 9.5 diff.
