I can tell you from experience you don't need it. I know many different 80's that are running 40's and no hydro assist, including myself.
Just wondered if its the size of the box or power steering pump being bigger

That is true. Not hard to swap them out during a box rebuild

There’s no replacement for hydro assist. Period.

One of the guys in our group has an 80 on 40’s and just went to assist. Night and day in turning power.

Im sure it does help, just saying it isn't needed, at least I haven't found it needed. Just didn't know why more people aren't running 80 series boxes.

Sweet I'll go tell the 80 guys who I wheel with that have 37s and 40s and couldn't steer with the stock system to pull their hydro assist systems off because they aren't needed.

You technically don't need hydro assist on anything, but if you want to steer off-road and not tear steering boxes off the frame it is nice.

I've been contemplating upgrading my steering system with an aftermarket pump but am always sketchy about Trail Gear parts. I've had zero issues with my hydro assist, except for the fact that at a decent speed, the steering responsiveness is VERY slow.

Since I've had my hydro assist on I've had zero problems. It's the fact I had to drill out the pump and they sent me maybe 2 feet of hose that I say just get a trail gear pump (a lot of people using them with good success) and get custom hoses made locally.

And hydro assist is night and day. Have made so many obstacles and avoided damage thanks to being able to just power through a turn. I don't do that often because I don't like stressing everything but I do when I need to.

What pump do you have there now? Stock one?

Also, the ram size could make a difference in the steering responsiveness. I went with a smaller one and it seems to be more responsive.

I am very happy with the PSC pump I have. Seems to work very well.

    And I agree that hydro is night/day difference...and I'm on 40"s :D

    Stock 3.4 pump

I have a 1.5"x8" PSC ram. I just don't think the pump is moving enough fluid for it to respond well at higher speeds

I bet that's the issue for sure. Try the PSC pump - if they still sell them. It is pricey but I think worth every penny.

My buddy in town also had issues with his hydro assist while he had the stock pump. Upgraded to a PSC one and it was a dramatic difference. He regretted not upgrading the pump sooner!

I haven't seen the PSC pump on their site, but I may try and call them to see if they can do anything.

Or, I can just order the Trail-Gear pump along with their bracket. I've been hearing good things about their pumps, so who knows. Then just to figure out reservoir options...

80 box, 60/62 box, and ifs box all have the same size sector shaft, pitman arms are compatible. The 80 box does have a bigger piston though. I think the reason people break them isn’t the fault of the box itself but the fact that they’re pushing big tires in a heavy pig 80 series when they let go.

Forward swing has better geometry as the pitman and steering arms are all turning parallel to each other and you don’t get the tangent angles at full steer, if you think about it the inches of push on the drag link per degree of rotation of the sector shaft goes down as you steer to the right with a rear swing box, and the opposite occurs between the drag link and the steering arm when you steer left.

You can also try a stock Saginaw tc pump and drilling out some ports on it. That's what I'm going to try, it uses the same bracket as the package or trail gear, so it's worth a shot. Shitloads of threads on pirate about those pumps.

Im going to go with the psc resi and surplus center ram.
