Yeah they all make good products. I’ll probably get the motobilt fuel cell kit eventually.

Thanks man. Cycled everything last weekend and only had to grind the cab a little. Plan is to run to big bear in California this weekend to pick up a solid axle industries full float kit with drive flanges to hopefully get this rear axle going. Supposed rear housing is 8 weeks out sadly. But then itll just be shafts.

    A thing or two...
So I've had a random thought floating around in my head for awhile, so I figured I would ask it here. Here or the LT forum seems like the most likely place to ask, but they're a little too salty over there.

Anywho... I was curious if anyone has converted a stock 2nd gen axle to free floating. This question first came to me when I was looking around on RuffStuff's website and saw their axle flanges that use Toyota front spindles.

    Stock-ish

    Don't underestimate the SAS forum...

I'm sure it can be done with an adapter ring that bolts where the drum backing plate would go and then a spindle bolted to the adapter but the real question is why bother? Then you need customer inner axles and all the hubs/brakes, plus drive flanges. Stock axleshafts typically are not a weak point and aftermarket housings aren't terribly expensive if you are looking to go FF or you can look at FZJ80 axles.

I have to agree with @Snowy. Seems like a waste considering all the work that needs to be done for not much of an upgrade. Rather go 80 axle or build a 9 in or Dana 60. hell you can even build a 14 bolt now and get 6 lug hubs for them.

I say this yet look at my front axle... oh well live and learn

No underestimation going on here. The amount of work you guys put into your trucks is amazing.

Thanks for the comments, fellas. Mainly this is a thought experiment because I saw the axle flanges on RuffStuff's website. I'm running +2 LT in the front, so eventually I'd like a wider rear axle to match. I've looked around some at the various aftermarket axle options, but that's another massive chunk of change. I did stumble across someone local-ish that's SAS'ing their 2nd gen. He's selling off his stock parts for dirt cheap (including rear axle), so it got me thinking again about if anyone had ever tried widening and floating a stock axle.

The main issue I see with the FZJ80 axle is that it's narrower than the stock 2nd gen axle from what I can find online, which is going in the wrong direction.

I'd almost say your better off building a 9 in. Fabricated housings are fairly cheap. Junkyard ones are next to free. Get a 35 spline center section and either do full float or semi float and I wouldn't worry about. Its expensive but this hole hobby is expensive. To much work and time in the stock rear and sourcing of parts I think to make that worth it

I’m over 8k in parts and I’m still collecting haha. It is expensive

    Yeah. I figure it'd run me 3-5k for a built 9" axle.
