The bear killed him. Then tracked her down. And killed her. Bear huggers had all sorts of excuses but it comes down to stupid people.

And I am old and slow. But I still shoot very well. Try running with a .45 colt stuck in your backside.

Didn’t read all the posts but the biggest thing to avoid cats is not to be moving around dawn and dusk when they’re most active. Just be done hiking by sunset and don’t start moving till the sun is up (assuming you’re backpacking)

they’re not gonna mess with you just chilling at camp.

Read somewhere there was a recording of both of them screaming seems they would be close together for that, so who knows.
In any case running was a joke. Bear spray or better yet a gun works.

I don't think that may have helped , the hiker looked to be approaching a female mtn lion with her cubs . Females a very protective of their cubs and will attack

I don’t think the lion would have touched him if he would’ve stood his ground and got big.

    but what do I know

In all of CA there's been 19 verified attacks in the last 35 years of which three were fatal...not exactly something to be concerned with.

Good point, likely wouldn’t have helped right in the beginning. But after a few hundred feet back toss those rocks baby. You saw the cat run away at the end.

Frankly. Running will only excite the Prey Drive of the animal.

No human is able to out run a bear or a mtn lion.

My mini-schnauzer is capable of 20 mph. Usain Bolt ain't that fast. Bears run 30 mph, mtn lions......probably faster.

Did everything right after it turned south, but being an idiot got him into that mess in the first place. Mama plus babies is never a good thing to close the distance with. Should have turned around the minute he saw cubs and instead decided to pull his phone out.

Exactly...there's only 24 or 25 fatal cougar attacks in the last 100 years.

    Trade you.

Mine can't tell the difference between bears, squirrels, or joggers.

Maybe it's an ambush predator, or maybe it's the guy at the next campsite stumbling around to take a piss. Either one gets the same response. :notsure:

22 attacks by Mountain Lions in Colorado since 1990.

The odds of being attacked are very slim. Typically running away will provoke an attack. Standing your ground, facing the cat raising up your arms (jacket or sweater between them) gives a big outline scaring off big cats.

Having said that a friend of my sisters was killed in Northern California on horseback. Mountain lion jumped from an overhead bluff and bit her neck.

My buddy was a Havowart. Think Rottweiler meets Golden Retriever. A fast, bright, and quick thinker. We were hiking and he suddenly did a 180. He wouldn't move, but when I glanced down his hair was on end! How does a dog do that? Only then did I look up and realize 20 feet behind us was a crouched mountain lion. The cat hadn't moved but staring at both of us like "damn, need to make other plans for dinner tonight". The cat slowly got up and just walked a half-circle around us, once he was gone did my dog start to relax. I swear he looked up at me with "Hey, I could outrun you!".

I remember as a kid looking for arrowheads with my dad and we heard a loud thump behind us and turned to see a huge lion trotting off. We just passed the tree and didn't even know we were being watched. We lucked out that day.

Damn dude, don’t let me go walking in the woods with you. You would rather shoot the man next to you, leave him to die and run away?
