My truck has the same noise, but it`s not that bad. I think the sound is coming from the mirror and it is wind noise. I was driving in some gusty winds and I could clearly hear the sound changing with the wind gust. To me it sounds like wind noise and not something mechanical. For me this is no big deal, but I guess it depends if it`s louder on other trucks.

Went to my dealer this morning. Took Bob's paperwork. They are very interested in this noise and will be calling the region Monday to confer. This is NOT wind noise. We have retracted the mirrors, Removed the air Dam,opened the hood latch, Packed the cabin vents, and eliminated any change of air. Toyota DSOM thinks Like I do and is coming from the drive shaft, which makes sense since not everyone has this issue. If it were wind noise EVERYONE with the same truck would have it. That is not the case.

My ASE Certified Neighbor said the same thing when he drove with me weeks ago. Said drives shafts need balancing like tires, Eliminated wheel bearings and rear end noise.

The Howling noise is very defined and was present on two new trucks. I drove one and the techs drove one. Leading them to believe this is a characteristic of the truck. We refuse to accept that and now the Region DSOM is involved.

You may not have the issue. not all trucks have this Howling sound. Its not something you really have to listen for. It shows up around 40mph and is very distinct and annoying.

It has not gotten that far yet to the solution phase until they get a grasp on how many trucks are affected.

That is what they will look at first. My dealer cannot switch drive shafts with trucks that may have the same issue. The dealer does not want to spend unpaid man hours to try to solve the problem. They are looking for guidance from the regional Service Manager and Toyota.

A few bad drive shafts could have gotten though. They don't put a lot of miles on these trucks to drive test them.

This issue is not present on most trucks. The forum represents that as well. Just a handful in different regions. At least the DSOM confirmed the issues as an issue and not "they all do that" He said it was "annoying" and it is for those who have it. It VERY easy to hear if one has a truck with the issue.

We have eliminated the transmission by shifting though the gears and seeing if the tone changes. It doesn't change with gearing. Only Speed which brings us back to the drive shaft. Loading the rear end or bearings does not change the sound either. It does change in intensity going over imperfections in the road...again leading to the drive shaft,

No. I mean 3-point, mic it.
Honestly, your recording sounds like noise.

No, like white noise. I can't hear the whistle just fine in my truck.

An out of balance drive shaft would cause more than the whirring noise that we are hearing.

You would have a vibration which feels like out of balance wheels.

That's good to know....wonder if its the carrier bearing. The guys from the region who heard it pointed to the drive shaft.

The noise is wind passing through the gap in the folding mirror. Mine does it too, roll your window all the way down while traveling at 35mph (loudest point) and cover the gap at the bottom of your mirror with your hand and it goes away. Im going to try some weatherstripping tucked in the gap to quiet the noise.

I just came back from a ride wrapped both mirrors with towels and retracted them. Noise is still present. Not the mirrors....I am trying everything, Not wind noise coming from any outside area/

On my particular truck this is where the howling is coming from. I just drove up to the store, howling was present - I put my thumb over the gap were I'm pointing and it stops. Sorry if this doesn't help some of you guys
