Solved a pet-peeve and added some colour. Mountain Hatch tailgate surface went in tonight.

Nice. Seems like a suitable solution.

I went and checked my tailgate cap and it’s rock-solid. No movement no matter how hard I push on it. My screws never ran out of threads and all went in tight, so maybe there’s been a slight change in the truck or the product.

Probably neither. Remember I got mine from misfits. That was about the only flaw I found in mine and that was minor.

Also, they seem pretty easily scratched but I think that’s expected given the material compared to the oem. I haven’t dragged anything across it to see but I’m sure it’ll be inevitable. I just noticed some straight out the box

That’s a nice alternative. Plus it’s aluminum vs plastic. How’s yours holding up so far?

Website quoted $30.01 for UPS ground shipping.
It is all square edge. I would have to do some routing and drilling to make it fit.

Mountain Hatch is $219 + $25 shipping. I guess the major question is, "is saving $100 bucks worth the risk of maybe not having it look as good as the Mountain Hatch?" I know I can fab the raw piece to make it fit, but might not be as "refined" with the tools that I would use.

I tried to consider all the options. Here's what I found:

    https://www.relentlessfabrication.com/collections/toyota/products/05-tacoma-tail-gate-reinforcement

    $169 - $264 , steel and aluminum options

    https://mobtownoffroad.com/product/2016-2020-toyota-tacoma-tailgate-reinforcement-plate/

    $119 - $229, steel and aluminum

    https://mountainhatch.org/shop?olsPage=products

    $229 for plastic

    https://adventure-ready.com/store/tailgate-cutting-board-toyota-tacoma/

    $179 for plastic overlay

    https://www.pakrax.com/products/pakrax-05-current-tacoma-tailgate-panel

    $129 for powder coated aluminum

I went went the last one. It is the best value (IMO), easy to install and works well as a flat tailgate, if not a charcuterie board.

These food grade type plastic surfaces don’t wear any better than other surfaces. They tend to scratch/gouge and fade pretty easily. Not to mention staining. Next time your at a deli type restaurant, take a good look at the cutting board surfaces their using.

OK, get it without. It will still hold up better than plastic and is way cheaper.
