I thought about the coated metal ones, but figured they’d look like total trash after a month or two. Not that it matters for function, but I like the idea of not have giant flakes of powder coat stripping off and ending up in my sushi. I also considered bare metal, but that’s pretty ghetto to begin with. If I went that route, I’d probably just get a piece cut.

I mean, Jon was a little cheesy. Hell, they all were. It was the 80's.

"You give love a bad name", "Wanted dead or alive", "Livin' on a prayer" ; all great songs (I would argue)

    Question: Is this "off topic"?

There’s definitely room for some Jon Bovi in this thread.

Did we just become best friends? Definitely enjoying this mod. My knees/stove/beer/wife/girlfriend all thank me for removing the ridges.

Got one on sale and had it shipped via ups to Hawaii for 20 bucks. It was worth every penny. I hated the factory tailgate skin. My ass couldn’t fit in between the ribs. I have had mine in since mid August and my dog has been all over and surf boards and such I have no deep scratches or any negatives to report

I want to find a solution, but I am more interested in strength more than anything else. My Gen one tailgate received some internal damage when hauling a 224 lbs. dirtbike. Only the rear tire was on the tailgate and with the bike pulled down to the front there was not much weight on the tailgate at all, but something broke inside resulting in protruding bumps on the outside skin of the tailgate. I was NOT happy. Tailgate remained straight and did not bow, but I expect it to be able to take a lot more weight and punishment than that. Tailgate on my 19 feels like a toy compared to my full size truck.

Can someone help me understand this....it’s supposed to be a giant cutting board? But what if you use your truck for truck things? I’m always pushing dirt bikes and car parts and lumber and whatnot up into the bed. Won’t this get too dirty for food in like, 0.2 seconds?

All joking aside, it's such an elegant answer to GMC's ridiculous Frankenstein's monster multifunction tailgate, heavy ass dippy thing.

The price is stiff, but the enjoyment value and likely durability is there I think. I want one. Looking forward to your take on it after some use

Of course it will get dirty. But it’s food grade material that doesn’t absorb/produce chemicals harmful to food. It can be cleaned and used to prepare food if you desire.

I mean, that’s kind of my point. You have to scrub it before you use it. Or you just carry a cutting board and put it on the tailgate...

I just don’t see the benefit behind this over the metal reinforcement tailgates

The food grade material and groovy colors are your big difference. I’m with you, I still use a cutting board on top of my mountain hatch. It just makes your tailgate a nicer platform for standing, kneeling, cooking, drink holding, playing solitaire, etc. Anything is better than stock.

personally, i don't think the mountain hatch has enough cup holders...

which is why i'm coming out with my own design featuring 18 std beer holders, 8 white claw holders (for the ladies), and 1 square cup holder because it's a tacoma and what's a tacoma product without a random square cup holder?

The OEM tailgate surface is composite, like the bed itself, (not really ‘plastic’ as stated by several of the manufacturers while selling their own system), so should be very strong.

if it is not strong enough, one of the steel options would be best I’m guessing.

They have sales all the time on them on their social media feeds; also they have blemished ones they sell - I think I paid $180 and w shipping it was $200. If you fish this is a nice add on to have.......I've already cleaned a few salmon/steelhead on this thing and then just add a little lemon joy soap, light scrub / hose it off. Food grade = no smell/odor/residue is absorbed.

Plug the food saver in to your bed outlet and vac seal your fillets then throw em into the cooler = no messy cooler to clean later.
