If I had some time on my hands it looks like I could make some money here. I can make 6 of these for about $250 in material.
Sell them for $100 plus shipping and it’s a win win for everyone (except mountain hatch I guess).

Honestly I don’t have the time right now with a small baby, but if I did it I would probably start with black, but I can also get white, a gray similar to cement, and a tan similar to quicksand. I can get other colors for about 30% more. I would use King Starboard, a marine grade HDPE so it’s UV stabilized.

The mountain hatch is 1/2in HDPE, my prices I stated are based on that, but honestly 1/4in would be plenty strong enough and would make for lower material cost, less routing, and weight saving shipping cost also. I could probably sell 1/4inch boards shipped under $100.

I don’t have a CNC machine so they would be routed by hand, but I work with this stuff a lot for work, while you may find a small imperfection, I think you would have to look hard for it. I wouldn’t put cup holders or logos in it, one solid sheet.

I think I have a large enough piece in 1/4inch gray for one tailgate in my garage, if I get some time maybe I’ll give it a try, but no promises.

hah sorry, i took a screenshot then deleted the file.

would you do this by hand with some jigs and fixtures? I priced this out using my CNC machine shop and between shop costs, materials, and labor it'd be a little over $100 in batches of around 10.

it's an aesthetically pleasing product but if function was more important than form i imagine a piece of sheet metal draped over the top of the tailgate, bent down, and bolted to the top of the existing tailgate piece would accomplish the same thing and be 25% of the cost.

Yes I’d do it by hand with a template or jig. It’s a very simple design.

Hood/bed lights, pop-n-lock, RSI EvoA, fully custom fuse box, Husky mudflaps, white interior LEDs, Morimoto xB v2 Headlights, Bilstein 6112/5160, Sumo Springs, Meso puddle pods and overhead lights, anytime backup mod, light out in reverse mod, ac drain mod, Calirased CAT protectors, ARB Dual Air in bed.
All this talk about the cover, and I've been waiting for someone to complain about the stupid plastic nuts / clips inside the tailgate stripping out just removing the bolts and the original tailgate insert. When I installed my pop-n-lock two of the plastic clips stripped out. Mobtown's tailgate kit has a rivnut replacements, which I totally recommend for strength / security.

I was actually impressed with the bite on the stock inserts. No issues. You gotta know your wrenching into plastic, and hold back a little, but they held fine for me.

Personally I wouldn’t slap my food on it bare but for me I got it for sitting and crawling in/out- the comfort of it

Cleans up nice but does scratch. Don’t think I’m worried about fading as much since I have a cap

Stop modding the bank’s truck! Pay that thing off first. The title in hand mod should always be first.

Stop upgrading the banks home while your at it.

Yes paying things off sooner is great because interest but isn’t a loan also beneficial to your credit? Personally my average loan length is lacking

BUT I got an even better idea, let’s let you do you and them do them. Why do you even care what someone else does with their money.

I believe purchasing a home and purchasing a vehicle are in completely different areas of the “responsible spending” spectrum. But if you view them as one in the same, that’s cool too. We all have our own situations, but car payments and credit cards you can’t afford are the most common way people get into financial trouble.

Nobody has to listen to what I have to say. I’m just a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude. But if someone doesn’t know any better because someone hasn’t explained how all this works, it’s worth offering some guidance. Cheers.
