Solved a pet-peeve and added some colour. Mountain Hatch tailgate surface went in tonight.

For those considering the mountain hatch, if you email them your military or LE credentials they will send you a coupon code for $30 off..I think it may apply to other emergency service agencies as well. (The discount pushed me over the edge )

I don't know if they actually call and verify, I think they just look at the identification that you send in.

You are correct. I just removed the aluminum plate from my daughter’s Pro. The aluminum model looks like trash with indentations, scrapes and dings after a couple of loads of logs and dragging heavy metal boxes on the tailgate.

Stainless does the same thing, looks like shit very quickly. See it all the time with guys at work with Snap on tool boxes with their fancy and expensive stainless steel box toppers.

I’ll remember to post pics after I get some use on mine. I’m unlikely to be carrying logs, but I don’t baby my stuff either, so we’ll see.

I did the same, considered many options and decided on the same Mountain Hatch as the OP for form and function. Can't wait till Christmas to install it. A great company and good people to work with as well

Anti skid tape. On the steps for 5 years.

The stock plastic tailgate cover is also slippery when wet. Especially with a canopy and jumping up with your boots to the side.

To those who installed these, are they just as rugged as the stock piece for supporting weight?

I have had no problems with mine. At this point I have had rocks and logs on it. It’s bulletproof. I’ll share some pictures when I think of it.

I'd love to read your review after more than a year of use... debating between MH and snail armor (aluminum). Thanks.

It’s held up fine. I don’t think much about it. I’ll try to remember to take a photo of it tomorrow in the daylight.

No regrets at all. Solved the main problem of kneeling on those ribs. I can’t say I use it much as a cutting board, but it is where I use my stove and lay out a meal. It has survived loads of firewood and lots of heavy items placed on it. Colour hasn’t faded. Screws have not come loose. Tailgate dampers have not broken due to the extra weight. No complaints.

Thank you. How about scratches? I've got 2 big, bone-headed dogs that will be jumping on and off the tail gate with muddy feet.

Is Mountain Hatch on here as a vendor? Would be great if they would do a group buy at discounted price... and more info on new products. I talked to them a few months back to inquire on possible custom colors, sadly not going to happen. But I was told about a “thin blue line” police edition they are supposed to be releasing. Would like to see pics of that! I’d def be in on a pre-order!!
    -Cheers!

Here is the surface as of today. Truck used as a truck. No special attention paid to this tailgate. Firewood, building supplies, standing on it, dragging stuff across it.

Thanks for the real world review. It doesn't look too bad. I still can't decide between this and aluminum... maybe with a thin rubber layer on top.
