My guess is it's one of the pulleys gone bad. I have an appointment tmrw morning. Hoping for something external to be the culprit.

Will do! We're about one year under that 6yr/60k mile warranty. It starts from the first recorded service date I read earlier.

An easy thing to check is to remove the serp belt and run it for a short period of time. If the noise has gone, then you can pretty sure it's one of the accessory drives: water pump, alternator, AC compressor/clutch, etc.

Again…don’t start that engine unless you are sure it’s not internal.
But hey your choice. And it won’t be those giving the advice on here to keep starting it to check shit that are going to be the ones without a vehicle or stuck with the bill if it is something major. Better safe than sorry.

Since we’re Al just pissing in the wind, My guess is AC clutch / compressor. The compressor will still cycle with the heater / defrost on as an anti humidity thing.

Im not starting this thing till it's ready to go in tmrw morning. It such a fine line between being a simple belt replacement to ..oh shit! Your injection lifter is fucked! Lol

with the engine off try spinning the clutch fan.

Next guess would be belt tensioner or idler pulley

Final guess would be a/c clutch

Dealer would say “it’s a truck!” Or “normal characteristic.”

All jokes aside sounds like a pulley for sure.

    Update:

Dropped it off with local Toyota. They said it's my water pump that's failed and is leaking onto the belt. Of course they dont have the part for three days but it's $230 for the pump added onto the labor and other garage , total is around $1k....

Looks like I have to fight a warranty claim as the pump should be included in the power train warranty.

Should not be a fight at all, it's pretty clear cut that it's covered. This is from the 2018 Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide regarding what is covered under the powertrain warranty:

    Engine:

Cylinder block and head and all internal parts, timing gears and gaskets, timing chain/belt and cover, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, engine mounts, turbocharger housing and all internal parts, supercharger housing and all internal parts, engine control computer, water pump, fuel pump, seals and gaskets.

In that second video that idler pulley is clearly stopping & starting a few times.... like it starts to seize then breaks free.

I have zero doubt the dealer would replace the pump for 1k then say we should replace that idler "while we're in there".

I'm not sure on that. I guess if the sound is still there they may dig in a little more but they were able to recreate the metallic sound. The guy said he wanted to take care of the third brake light TSB. Not really my top priority.

I would ask him to show you evidence its the water pump. Then I would confirm its covered under warranty.
