I got a reply from the dealer that I bought the truck from regarding what front springs are on the truck. Turns out they are just OEM springs powder coated red. I also looked at the part number on the front Bilstein struts which are 24-280785 (apparently they are the same as 24-239370, both part numbers are interchangeable). After googling I found out that they seem to be technically for 2nd gen Tacomas, however, I found a couple treads on here from people who also use them on 3rd gens.

The Bilsteins are set to the highest setting which is the 4th notch. Could this be causing the strut to top out/overextend and that could be the clunk noise I hear? However, I only hear the clunk from the drivers side, if the strut was topping out I would think that I would hear it from both sides. I already asked the same question in the suspension forum but I thought I would update here also and hopefully get some opinions.

Update, I finally bite the bullet and took my truck into my local dealer. They gave me a bit of a hard time about the truck being lifted but after about 4 hours I got a call saying the technician could not replicate the sound. This is about what I had expected to happen since the clunk is not consistent and only happens over certain bumps. The service advisor did say however that the next best course of action is if I ride along with the technician during a test drive so I can replicate the clunk. Going to try and go ahead with that and see how it goes.

Final update, I had my follow up appointment at the dealership. Went for a test drive with the technician to try and replicate the sound and also showed them the video that I posted earlier. A couple different technicians looked at the truck and were fairly stumped on what the sound could be. I wasn't very hopeful that they would be able to find the problem. However, once the technician got the truck on the lift and shook the truck by going up and down with the lift. He saw that the drivers sidestep was coming into contact with the pinch weld at the front of the cab. The dealer didn't charge me anything for their time which was really nice.

So that was the clunk sound I was hearing all along, caused by the aftermarket sidesteps that were on the truck when I bought it. I have since taken off the sidestep and readjusted it.IMG_1387.jpg
