didn't you have some guy redo your wire connections to the pump or going to the pump? I would check if perhaps this "fixed" connection may have a bad solder connection or something.

so hard to keep track of all this

Tell me about it man! I am totally lost myself. Really getting harder and harder to remember all the details.

The mechanic that had to go to Florida replaced the pump. Pretty sure I remember that he found no rust in the tank and the wires looked good, so from what I remember, he didn't have to do any soldering or anything. I know he replaced fuel return lines under the truck (2 of them I think?), not because they had problems, but just because they were old and he said it made sense to do it when the tank was off. He replaced some kind of fuel line that was leaking under the hood too.

Another thing the current mechanic said was that he thinks there might be an oil leak, then wondered out loud about it possibly being related to the valves I think? He also said he noticed a wrong sized bolt had been used for some ground wires to the engine, I think he said it was one that was supposed to go somewhere else on the truck.

My best guess right now is something with the circuit opening relay stuff or some wiring between it and the starter or it and the ECU or something.

Wow. Thank you so much K!!!! I want to check a couple things (FSM, and maybe even forward the photos you just posted to our mechanic and/or dealer parts guy to be 100% sure that is indeed it. It sure as hell looks like what I'm imagining, but I want to be certain before you go to the trouble of sending. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will post again or PM you very very soon, thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Just printed nice quality photos of what you posted - will run them down to mechanic when they open at 8 to show them to him and be sure this is a match. Will also email the pics to my favorite dealer parts guy, who should also see them at 8 when he comes in. Then I will PM ya, thank you K!!

K, you have power windows, right? I know when I spoke to dealer parts about the circuit opening relay last week, they said THREE possible matches came up by VIN number, then they needed to know if we had power windows to determine which of the three. But honestly the guy that always triple checks things was off that day (he's there today, yay!), so I'm not even 100% sure whether the power windows thing is relevant or not. The guy I talked to about that last week is super nice but doesn't always triple check things the way the other dude does.

Also, here's the diagram in the FSM of the part - does this look like what you pulled out? I'm still going to verify with dealer parts and mechanic too........thank you!!

Thanks K. No problem about the pic, totally understand. I tried to paste that diagram straight into my post, but it wouldn't let me.

Anyway, I've emailed dealer parts guy the photos you posted along with our VINs and all of my specific questions to get his help in being sure we're on the right track. Then I gotta go to the dentist for a filling to be replaced (old dentist did a crappy job on it and it's been bugging me for 2 years - finally doing something about it!) - not looking forward to this :(. After that I'm gonna swing by the mechanic with photos (should be late morning), and hopefully will also have some kind of reply from the dealer parts guy by then, and I'll also take my camera to snap some photos of the Taco's current circuit opening relay crap. We'll get this figured out!!

Thank you so much for all of your efforts, really appreciate it!! :) I am truly in awe over the kindness all of you have shown us here on TW!!! Has made an awful situation so much better!!! :)

Thank you K! Dealer parts emailed back and said our circuit opening relays are identical (sweet!!! can't believe my luck!) and said the part # is 85910-35040. He even apologized for the wrong info the other guy gave me last week and explained that he's in training. This guy is so super nice, I can't believe how much he's gone the extra mile for me the last 3 months and we've barely spent a dime on parts from them!! Even the guy that gave wrong info - at least he's super duper nice!! Wow. Wish all service experiences could be this awesome. Why is it the parts guys at the dealers are so nice and helpful, yet a lot of the techs are not so much?

Don't go to any trouble yet K on getting that circuit opening relay out though. I want to verify with the mechanic that this is definitely something worth trying to swap in a known good part, because after reviewing the FSM info related to it this morning, I am second guessing whether it makes sense that this could be the issue. And I'd hate to see you go through the PITA to send unless we have good reason to think it's worth trying. I'm going to run the FSM pages down to him and show him what has me questioning it and see what he thinks, then I'll post right away afterwards. Was planning to go down there today, but I can't really talk very well with my lip being numb from the dentist, so I might have to wait til tomorrow. Plus I can't really show up empty handed in terms of baked goods when I'm asking him to read over some crappy FSM stuff with me, so I gotta get some cookies baking this afternoon then run it all down to him 1st thing tomorrow.

Thank you for sticking with us and doing so much to help us!!! :)

    Hi all! :)

Took the mechanic some ginger cookies this morning, and also a little binder I assembled of the FSM doc's that I think could be relevant to the issue. That dude is so cool - he read through the pages with me, and was super stoked about the cookies. He is just a really nice, humble guy.

He tried the igniter, and also separately tried the MAF - nope on both. Damn!

But he's about to try the computer. I let him know I think I can get a COR - or hope anyway. :D

K, the attached pics are of the circuit opening relay that's in my Taco now. I really apologize - I told you the wrong area to look in when I said down by where the hood is popped. It's actually just below/to the left of the steering column (apologies if you already know this). You take that big plastic panel off that conceals all the crap below the steering wheel, then the COR is that little green guy just under/to the left of the steering wheel column thing. That second pic is total crap, but I was trying to get a view of what the general area that the thing is in looks like - you can kinda see the little green corner of it poking out.........then the top right brown shadowed area of that photo is the steering column. If you are still up for tracking that guy down and sending it out, I'd really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!! :):):)

Thanks for reading TW!! Keep hoping for some good news for us eventually!!!! :)

well its got the ugly ass gages that make me want to puke, why Toyota didn't stick with the nice looking black gages is a mystery?

    or is it the color?

looks like a great truck and I would trade mine in on it in a second if I wanted a 4wd

ask yourself a simple straight up question:

what is KBB on your truck as it sits? (because everything you have put into it since the engine broke adds no "real" value)

if you are only underwater a few thousand then trade yours in on it and jump on it and be done with it and enjoy life and all the mechanical troubleshooting training experience you got along the way

Couldn't agree more about the gauges - why did they change it to that? Very weird looking.

But the problem is the color. Same color as our Civic, which I've always hated.

But this truck is pretty low in miles and has all the goodies we'd want, except the color. I could live with the color issue if I could have all the other stuff. All that other crap is hard to find on a Taco with less than 100K for less than $20K.

Plus if we wind up replacing our Taco, as much as I've tried to look at other vehicles besides Tacos the last few weeks, I am still just sold on Tacos. Also, now with everything we've learned about how ours works, it would be cool to put that knowledge to some use by replacing it with something very similar.

And I'm looking at it exactly how you said - like, we'd probably lose out on a couple grand when all is said and done if we got this in place of our Taco, which sucks, but then we'd have a way lower in miles, slightly newer Taco for a reasonable monthly amount. It's very very tempting. Really, there's always that chance that even if we get the starting issue figured out, we could have a transmission failure next or something! This red truck is kind of a baby as far as Tacos go in mileage. This is very very tempting. Plus I looked up KBB on this red truck and it's a couple thousand less than the ad's listed price, so there should be some wiggle room on the price.

Hmmm. Maybe we should test drive it tonight.

if you want it, get froggy and jump! because it will be gone very fast and your not going to see another one that nice with that kind of low miles ever. hell I don't even want a 4wd but if it were around here I would be signing the papers on it as we speak.

must be an old man who left it in the garage and never drove it except to grocery store and church.

as for the color, well cant you get a nice red dress and shoes to match so you are color coordinated? :p

hell after its paid off you can always get it repainted

That is the sister truck to my white one, right down to the miles. Better jump on it if you want it. Those miles are extremely rare.

I know you guys!! The more I keep thinking about this, it really makes sense! I want that truck. Gonna talk hubby into test driving tonight. We could try to sell our Taco private party, and clean it up/detail it nicely, and be honest about the engine swap and the starting issue. That way we could sit on it for a while and hope that the right buyer would eventually come along that is mechanically inclined and not scared away by the starting issue. So far, there's no reason to think the engine isn't any good, and the fuel system is new. The right buyer might see the value in those things, especially if we pretty it up as best as we can, and we might be able to nearly break even on this whole mess. And be left with a younger version of the same truck! The red is the only thing I don't like and I am SO willing to sacrifice that when I think about what we'd get in the big picture. I'm kind of getting excited about this! I hope that dealer isn't slimy. Saw some yucky reviews about them on a few sites. KBB on that truck is $13,700, and they are asking $16K.

OMG. I just thought of the most comical thing - if we got that truck, then maybe in 10 years we'll be begging parts off of Koditten's sister truck all over again!!!!![IMG]

EDIT: Or, who knows, maybe it'd wind up the other way around and we'd get a chance to return the favor!!!

EDIT #2: OK, we gotta compare VINs on this truck and yours K!! Make sure we've got a match on all those weird little hard to find expensive parts!! [IMG]

EDIT #3: Just emailed the dealer to get more info!
