    Jen,

I think my email is acting up.

Did you get my message, with phone number?

Did you figure out when you wanted to drop it off?

Hi Jason! I did get your messages, thank you so much! Been trying to reach my husband, Eric, to see when he'd like to bring it. Hoping to talk to him in the next hour or so about it, but my guess is Monday will be best for us if that is still good for you guys. And yes, we'd love to stick around to experience the problem with you guys, that would be great!! How late are you guys usually there til? Thinking Eric can miss an hour or so of work, so we can follow each other and leave together in our Civic, plus we're both excited to meet you guys and properly thank you for taking such an interest to help us like this!! We are really grateful! I will email you as soon as I can reach Eric and we decide when to bring it. Thank you! :)

    Ok. No problem.

Jay is probably here later than me each night, but I leave around 4:30 or 5:00.

I can get you home, if you live within a 10 mile radius of the dealership via our free shuttle service.

OK, just talked to Eric. We'd like to bring it Monday morning if that's OK? What time do you guys get there? He said he can be as late as he needs to be Monday, so we're flexible, just let us know what works for you guys! :)

EDIT: You and Jay should start thinking about your favorite types of cookies........right TW? ;)

I'm Matt from Illinois and I'm here to help!

...and that was possibly the stupidest thing I've ever posted on the internet, but Jen made me do it.. So yeah, this probably belongs in the " introduce yourself" section, but nobody's ever gonna read that or care, so...

I don't own a Tacoma, and, after listening to Jen's problems, for the last five months, I'm pretty sure I'm not buying one any time soon, lol. Sometimes Im pretty good fixing things. Cars, motorcycles, homicide scenes, what have you. About a quarter century ago, I went to school to be an auto mechanic, worked as one very briefly, decided that working on other people's cars for a living sucked, went on to smaller and worse things, lol.
Anyway, Jen seems to think I can add something useful to this thread. Now that I've read most of it, I'm pretty sure she's wrong. Let's talk about whiskey or tube guitar amps or something fun.

    Matt! You joined TW! Hurray!!

Guys, Matt is being very humble. He's pulled off some pretty genius mechanic stuff in the 20+ years I've known him. I forced him to join the thread and give any input he wanted to, cuz I value his opinion!

    Welcome to TW Matt!! :)

Can I run this theory by the group.

To easily test for leaking injectors can one bleed the fuel pressure immediately after turning the engine off?
Would having no pressure on the fuel lines prevent fuel from reaching the cylinder?

If there is no easy way of bleeding it maybe removing power to the pump and letting engine shut off.

I'm just guessing here, just wanted to get your thoughts

I know, I saw you stop in and say hi and I was really happy about it! Been a while Bama! Glad to see you are all caught up on the latest excitement on the thread! How ya been?

I know, we thought about it..........FL is a long haul from Portland though!! Excessive cranking our way across the country sounded like it could be too much for my already shot nerves to handle! :) Wish you could've flown up here to fix it for us, although I suppose you'd have needed a place to work on it........that has better than our Harbor Freight tools..........hmmm :D

I know, I am really hopeful and excited. If these talented guys can fix it on our Taco, we can share the fix on the thread and it could really help A LOT of people!! That would be so cool. They have a chance to be heroes on Tacoma World!! And especially if they've got helpful input from all of you brilliant TW folks!!

Maybe we'll finally be able to end this annoying problem for both of us! How cool that would be?!?! :)

OK so pressing the backspace button while not clicked into the message box will take the browser back to the previous page! Which is probably common knowledge .. ? Anyway.. goodbye last 20 minutes of my life writing a huge post :). Let's start over ...

Since it looks like this is going to happen I am thinking of a plan of attack.

First thing's first - I/we need to see the problem happen. This way we will know when the problem is resolved, pretty simple

Second thing's second - I would like to T in a fuel pressure gauge and run the line out the back of the hood so the hood can be closed to simulate the conditions for the problem. Something to look for (previous suggestion) is if the fuel pressure has bled off since the truck was shut off.

If fuel pressure is abnormal we would start going down that path - what is causing this? If fuel pressure readings are normal we would continue:

To determine if the problem is from a rich condition, lean condition, sensor malfunction or mechanical issue

Plan for testing for a lean condition: I would like to T in a long vacuum line from the intake manifold following the fuel pressure gauge hose out the back of the closed hood. If spraying fuel (parts cleaner) into the engine results in starting we could be looking for something causing a lean condition

Plan for testing for a rich condition: I have not technically found this in the repair manual (RM), but have seen it with an acura before. If you press and hold the gas pedal to the floor this is an input to the ecm for (theory) "clear flood mode" and the ecm will reduce injector on time or cut off injection? I believe this applies to all efi vehicles but I can't find written proof

Plan for testing for sensor malfunction: Connect scan tool and take a snapshot (record) data pid's during cranking. Then go back and look at rpm, temp sensor, timing advance, maf reading, tps, iat, etc. The problem I see with this is that older vehicles have a super slow refresh rate on the scan tool and it might be too slow to capture good info. Something else to try possibly is "check mode" an option w/the scan tool that in theory should help detect sensor malfunction.

Yeah theory is nice but sometimes you get to the vehicle and it falls apart :)

So that's pretty good plan to start I guess some other stuff to look at would be: pump wiring at fuel pump (someone on the line has said this was their problem), unplugging iat sensor this would be removing iat sensor wire from maf (people on the interwebs with 4cyl tacos seem to have this solve the long crank), lack of spark or intermittent or weak spark, egr system malfunction, current reading of fuel pump during operation, cam and crank waveforms with picoscope

I'm just hoping for some random luck, that seems to work the best
