No clear coat will be needed.

There is an automotive version of spakaling that is used for small nick, but for what you are doing, I don't know why regular spakaling wouldn't work. Put on one, good coat and let it dry. If you like it and can detect non of the previous color, you are done. If you want it thicker, roll on another when it is dry.

Rolling the paint will get you some scratch filling action, 2 coats will fill in some serious scratches. Might not want to bother with the filler.

nooooo, don't use spackling, no mater what you do to it it will dissolve again when it gets wet.

what you are thinking of is a premixed bondo in small tubes like toothpaste for small jobs, you just squeeze out and spread smooth and it gets hard after like an hour then you sand it smooth.

and I agree rolling on the paint will fill all the scratches except deep gouges
umm, im presently permanently prescribed to take 7 medicines daily and 5 of them are not to be mixed with alcohol, so I take them with water. I don't drink at all during any other time but on Friday nights I drink my "special" punch at the card game while they steal my money. it gets me less drunk then those straight shots of that nasty no name scotch I used to drink lol.

I guess Friday night could be a night to have a few sips. I just got done talking to the diatition. She said 2 light, beers per day would be the max. Better than nothing I guess. I forgot to tell her I usually drink 24 oz cans. Oops.

    Just kidding. I WILL behave.

Seriously? All the camping you do and no lighter fluid? I gotta say, I'm surprised.

here is my trick for paint removal from hands.

first slather on a good coat of hand lotion and let it soak in for about 15 minutes, this puts oil into the skin and under the paint to help it release the paint. then use a green pot scrubber for dish washing to rub the paint off and follow it up with 97% isopropyl alcohol. this is completely harsh chemicals free but be carefull not to rub too hard with the green scrub pad or it will leave you with raw skin

Funny, I wound up trying rubbing alcohol and it kinda faded. That coupled with several vigorous hand washings made it even better.

You guys, it looks way better than I expected!! Posting pics in a sec, wanna go show off to neighbor, I heard him just pull up. He just told me this morning that Rustoleum was a bad idea :D it looks freaking awesome for what I spent and the amount of work I did!! :)

    Before paint photos:

Previously pressure washed old black paint away and also pressure washed inside of canopy, then washed it with car soap.

Once it was dry I scrubbed the surface of red exterior with a brown scotch brite pad to scuff the surface.

Then taped off windows and trim with some old paper bags and blue painter's tape, then wiped it down one more time.

    Post paint photos:

Used a regular sized roller and roller tray to apply Rustoleum black gloss oil based just like you'd paint a room. It was way easier than I expected. The stuff was thick and could easily glop up on you if you farted around after you poured it, but I had no problems applying it at a normal rate. It actually came out shiny, which surprised me. Yes, it's gloss paint, but I just didn't know what to expect and didn't have high hopes. I am extremely satisfied with it, for the amount I spent and the amount of labor/time involved. I don't even think I need a second coat! Can says 24 hrs if doing 2nd coat, so I'll decide tomorrow but right now it looks great!

    DSCF3353[1].jpg

You can see my roller marks in this photo. I f'ed up there. It had already started drying too much right there when I went over it again. That might wind up being the only reason I'd do a second coat:

Those little nooks and crannies, like this photo show, were the biggest PITA with that thick, ready to turn gloppy if you're not careful paint.

I had that little foam roller thingy (see other pic) but for some reason I didn't try using it. Instead I tried to use this little foam thing on a stick which was worthless and made a globby mess in a little corner. So I switched to just a small, dirt cheap paint brush and that worked just fine along the tight edges and nooks and crannies.

why didn't you pull out the front gasket and paint it all?

its going to be easy to see that missed area of red paint when standing by the truck and look like a half azzed job

get er done right and get the area you missed

No, I got that part!!! I was just showing an example of an area that was kinda a PITA compared to the rest of it.
