Who gives a shit about arts and crafts, more about the strawberry drinks.

Just kidding. People go nuts for art! Make it and sell it! My wife sells the most amazing things on Etsy. The one thing that comes to mind, a woman from Florida wanted an Afghan blanket made with 4 yarns! The needles were as big as my finger! I could not believe how heavy the thing was!

Hell yeah!! Thanks for the encouragement buddy!!! I wanna do old west style lettering to write stuff on cool pieces of wood, like "saloon" or stuff like that. Dog's names, favorite sayings, you name it........there's plenty of crafty shit you can do with this engraver wood burner thingy!!

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm strawberry drinks :D

Warning - not a light hearted message about pies and trucks and wood engravers this morning, sorry :D

    Morning TW. :pccoffee:

Have any of you seen the articles floating around recently about the high potential for devastating earthquake in the NW? Someone recently wrote an article for the New Yorker on this topic, which has got tons of others talking/writing articles about it too.

So we started talking about what we'd do if one struck. But how the heck do you make a plan to meet up when you have no clue whether you'll have phone service, be able to get over a bridge, what roads will be closed/destroyed, etc? Thinking an ATV or a horse would be handy!! Even a regular old bike would be good.

Have any of you guys ever tried to make a solid plan for reuniting with family/evacuating your area in prep. for a possible disaster? What are the guidelines you used to pick meeting points and stuff like that? We have rivers everywhere in Portland, with bridges over them. So you basically have to cross a river to get anywhere you want to go. And I read that bridges are vulnerable in massive quakes. So WTF do you do when you are surrounded by rivers with downed bridges and need to find your favorite whisky drinking buddy to have a seriously massive drink together spouse?

I feel like we should at least put together some kind of survival kit, and do our best to come up with a reuniting/evacuation plan. @koditten , I'll be sure the kit has a small bottle of J & B ;)

@keakar , were you affected by Katrina at all? If so, any advice on things you learned from it that worked or didn't work out so well?

Sorry for the heavy topic. Gotta share what's on my mind with my TW buddies though :D

we gots no earthymaquakes down here but every year we get hurricanes.

but you get advanced warnings for those.

as for regular prep, flashlights and extra batteries, MREs, case of water bottles (traded out for fresh one every month or so), water purification tablets, soap and 5 gallon bucket of tap water for light freshening up, first aid kit, basic household tool kit, keep a 2 week supply of all medications on hand, 2 week supply of pet food in dry and canned form, warm blankets, battery operated fans and radios, good set of maps for your state and the neighboring states, an understanding partner that doesn't want to bitch and fight with you because they are miserable so they make you miserable.

oh and if you have refrigeration needs, a generator with 15-20 gallons of gas (traded out for fresh gas every month or so) to run refrigerators and freezers until power is restored

    that's about it

    Afternoon TW!

Thanks for the tips @keakar !! That's some good advice buddy! Eric will love your advice about the generator. He's been trying to convince me that we need one for quite some time. They are expensive though!!! We'll see, someday for sure but not likely soon...

What's new and exciting with all you guys?

I woke up with this terrible stomachache this morning, so I stayed in bed and watched some old TV shows - the best remedy!!! Watched a Julia Child episode, a couple of "I Dream of Jeannie" episodes and part of a woodworking show. Good stuff :D Much better now :) Time to head to the park! :D

you would be surprised how many gallons of water you use every day when you are out of your normal comfort zone, its about double what you use when camping.

for the generator it has to be a size that fits your needs so if you have a freezer and a refrigerator you need a 5000-6000 watt generator and it runs around 4 hours on 6 gallons of gas. that's enough to refreeze the freezer (soft frozen not hard frozen) and cool things off in the fridge, but only "if" you keep the doors closed and only open and close them fast like they have a swam of bees inside so the cold air stays in it. open the door for 30 seconds and that's enough cold air gone to have kept things from spoiling for an extra hour.

generators are not that expensive when you think what it costs to throw away everything in your freezer and refrigerator

here are some for $600-$700 http://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors...4f/Ntk-Extended/Ntt-generator?Ntx=mode&NCNI-5

and if you just want something for the camp site to run a TV or have lights and a fan running http://www.homedepot.com/p/Powerland-Portable-1-500-Watt-Gas-Electric-Generator-PD2000/205417726

I read the NW quake piece in the NYer and considered a) selling now and moving east of Hwy 5, b) spending more time on desert trips, c) hoping that the end comes quickly if I'm in the "zone". Then I went into the shop.

Some things in life you can't prepare for, they just arise and you get to deal. But, minimally, I'd strongly advise laying in a store of booze for the bad times. You won't have to swap it out every month and everyone will need a drink when the going gets that rough. A case of the cheap stuff will be priceless. And, maybe, most of us could benefit from practicing keeping calm under stress. Someone is going to need think straight.

In other developments, since you asked, I'm getting ready for a big western loop. Clockwise, as far as southern Alberta, the Black Hills, roaming in Colorado, and some backpacking on the North Rim of GC.

Guys, I'm heading to the doc this afternoon, had some weird pain in the R side of my chest that came on with exercise (walking Dolly) the last couple days. Hoping/thinking just a pulled muscle or something. But my dad has pretty severe heart disease that started with a heart attack about my age, so I'm not going to keep wondering and waiting to see what happens next. Plus as much as I'd like to be, I am not a shining example of perfect health in terms of diet and exercise (and drinking!). We do lots of stuff right, but our problem is not being consistent about it. Big long healthy hike, followed by weeks of little to no exercise type thing. Several super healthy meals in a row, followed by several days of pizza, burgers, etc - you get the idea. ;) Hey man, variety is the spice of life, right? :D Anyway - no more guessing and worrying - hopefully the doc can do labs and tell me whether to stop worrying or do some kind of tests. And I'm sure I'll get the good ol' diet and exercise guilt trip lecture regardless - no doc visit would be complete without that!!

Cross your fingers :fingerscrossed: that this is just another one of my worrying too much scenarios guys!! :)

Your trip sounds FUN! Jealous!! Very cool! You are quite the adventurer, aren't you??? :) Please share pics when you get back!! :D

For us, moving east would be the ultimate solution as far as the earthquake stuff, since we'd love to anyway!! Eric's been planning to job hunt in our fave eastern Oregon areas anyway as he gets close to finishing up his networking degree, although I'm not holding my breath as jobs are fairly few and far between in smallish towns.

Short of that working out, I like your advice - have some alcohol and someone that keeps calm under stress (can you guys guess which one of us that is? hint, it's not me :D). And don't stress it too much, cuz some things in life you can't prepare for - that is so very true.

My big thing is still the fear of losing all forms of communication when trying to meet up with your peep(s). We've talked about various meet up points if this or that happens, but that's the problem - no way of predicting what will or won't be damaged, so tough to tell whether various meeting points would actually work out or not.

I'm not completely fixating on this, but I do think it deserves a bit of thought, so that we take a few basic, reasonable steps to prepare.

Don't forget to share pics, I would love to see more of your adventures through the beautiful areas of the west!!! :)

Good luck on those tests. I hope nothing odd is found. I hope it's not the gall bladder.

I know, I thought about that, because that's kinda high up in the abdomen area (AKA low down in the chest area) on the R side, isn't it? But would gall bladder issues be induced by exercise?
