the only thing I see wrong with it is it doesn't have power windows and the license plate is bent which was probably done taking it off the car carrier but look under there just to be sure.

its the car that matters more then the dealer but I agree, cars you get from small dealers need to be checked more closely for hidden problems but I trust that you and Eric know more then enough to find any issues

Yep. Although I probably didn't explain that very well - the Civ was fairly problem free most of it's life, other than going through distributors like Tundras go through gas ;) It's just that naturally, over the past few years, the frequency of the issues significantly increased since it's getting so damn old now. That's how I know it's really time to let go this time. Shit just keeps breaking like daily now - it deserves retirement now, it worked hard for many years.

If we can't get shit for it on trade in value, it would be really cool to donate it to OPB. I don't even know if I'd drive it ANYWHERE at this point, knowing what happened to Eric with the brakes. We were drinking and laughing at the ridiculousness of it last night, but really, that's freaking terrifying. He said he had to pull the E brake to stop when he realized the pedal was still on the floor. Fuck that, I do not want to fix all that crap then wonder what will suddenly break next that could kill us.

Keakar, find me that same Corolla in automatic, mmkay buddy?

Yeah yeah, I could learn and all that, but fuck that. Too lazy. American way, right? :D Actually, I learned in high school. Then I always drove automatics so I forgot how. :D

That is cheap!! Automatic too! Thanks Keakar! Going to look at the carfax.........

I like this Jetta, but I don't know anything about them. Low miles, reasonable price, nice looking, 2 prev. owners both lived around here.......http://www.tonkingreshamhonda.com/u...wagen-jetta-sedan-wilsonville-oregon-23198165

Are Jettas a PITA to work on? I know Eric said his tools only work on Japanese stuff, so I think that's part of why we keep looking at Honda, Toyota, Subaru....would he have to get different tools since they are German cars?

Holy crap, for having so many miles, that thing has a fairly clean history! 3 owners, all around here. But it's weird how it says "exempt from odometer reading" each time they renewed reg. in Washington. Why exempt? Doesn't that mean they could fuck with the odometer?

This could be an easy solution for cheap commuting for at least 5 yrs I'd imagine. With AC and brakes that work even!! : )

its cheap because of the mileage (which we know isn't that bad for a Toyota) and it doesn't have power windows and locks and nobody wants cars without power anymore. because its way to difficult to have to push the knob to lock the door or turn a crank to make the window move lol.

Holy crap, you're right, manual windows and locks!! Didn't even notice at first. I can totally deal with that to save $. In fact, it would be nice to not worry about the damn power window sliding off the track.

Gas for commuting would stay dirt cheap, and insurance would too. Hmmm. Wonder if it has any issues. I don't want issues. :D

carfax says no indication of mileage rollback so its most likely they just didn't record the mileage on those checks.

its a 3 owner (12 miles first owner ?????????) but next two owners had it for 80k miles each

I don't see how you could go wrong with that car unless you find mechanical or electrical issues, if I were shopping I would be on my way there tonight.

and ask to trade the civic in on it, (tell them the brakes don't work) all they can say is no and you don't have to worry if who you sell or give it to, gets in a wreck with it or has to spend HUGE $$$ on it.

Just realized it's up in Seattle. I have no problem going that far for the right vehicle, but the crappy thing is I'm not sure how we'd get it looked over. Ideally we'd have noahpete inspect whatever we narrow it down to, and especially if it's a Toyota. Hmmmm. Wonder if those Seattle used car dudes would let us drive it to Portland overnight? Wait, then we'd be leaving the Taco there. Yikes!! They are probably in the sketch-ville part of town!! Poor Taco doesn't want to spend the night there!

Maybe he knows of a good tech at a Seattle Toyota dealer? Thinking driving it all the way back down here then back up there just for inspection is probably not realistic....

Plus leaving the Taco =

for the price and distance away, I think this is one you have to assume a little risk in not having a dealer check it out and just use both of your experience of everything you learned about cars to check it out yourself. otherwise have a local dealer near him check it but who do you trust to do that?

easy things to check yourself are:

seat belts and seat belt lights all work
    door ajar lights work
what does engine bay look like
what does battery and the terminal connections look like (how old does battery look)
smell engine oil for burnt smell
check tranny fluid for red and not brown color
check radiator for antifreeze and fill level
check wiper reservoir for wiper fluid and not just water
check all things work like cruise control (if it even has it) and intermittent wipers work
check tires for good tread but also for cracks in sidewalls and between the threads that say they are dry rot tires
check condition of spare tire and jack and that they are there
check door and trunk gasket seals
check all lights work inside and out
take note if headlights are hazy (minor issue if it is)
make sure keys open everything smoothly and not with resistance indicating it might be worn and need to be replaced soon (minor issue if it is)

Just saw your last sentence here. A nearby Honda dealer said the tech that looked at it might be interested in buying it from us if we throw in the towel. So I think we'd try that first, and probably just tow it there to be safe, but if he's not interested I'd consider donating it to Oregon Public Broadcasting. They have some program set up where they tow it away for you. Plus I love OPB - best TV shows around, we've learned so much cool stuff about Oregon watching that channel.
