I doubt the Corolla will out last anything else I listed. While they are reliable they do have little things that go wrong. As for the Civic I have a buddy with one where the LED's in the dash are going and now his digital speedo isn't properly displaying at night. Not something I'd want.

TBH Toyota and Honda don't have the unassailable lead in reliability they once did when it comes to small cars. If you were looking at older than 10 year models I would go Honda or Toyota but for something a few years old I think there are better buys that should treat you well.

Gotcha, makes sense! Thanks :)

PS: That deal with your buddy's spedometer, yeah, that would suck!! We have annoying crap like that in our 93 Civ - issues with the wipers, the window, the dash lights......gets old after a while dealing with all that crap.

When they switched to the digital dash. IIRC 2012.

Just an aside, sometimes Hyundai offers 0% financing over 8 years on the new Elantra's. At 0% you can pay it off as you want and with that long term it isn't costing you anything more to do so. Hyundai also comes with a very good warranty, and then you'd have a good car for a long time and get whatever options you want on it....

Just a thought. We paid $19K CAD for our Sonata and it did really well for us for 4 years and over 60K miles with the same engine and transmission as the Elantra. Not to mention even the base model came with heated seats and some other great options.

Yeah, right now Hyundai is offering $1500 cash off and 66 months 0%. If you haggle off another 1K, you can get a fairly loaded value package Elantra, with a sunroof and all the goodies you could want, for right in the $17K range. I'm not sure what your budget is but if you were looking at used cars in the 10K range over 5 years at 3 or 4 % the payments wouldn't be much more.

    10K 5 years at 4% monthly payment: $188
    17.5K 6 years at 0% monthly payment: $243

So for $50/month you could have a brand new car, with all of the warranty, with more options, that's reliable, etc....

Sorry, I've had a few friends go Hyundai now for this reason. It's hard to beat their deals. They sell pretty well equipped models for well under 20K.

    Something to consider, definitely.

I'm trying to look at all options and be open minded right now.

Honestly, deep down I will be shocked if we wind up with anything but another Civic. It's sort of like a disease I developed somewhere in the last 17 years..........

lol, you are like a kid in a candy store going from display to display wanting it all.

how about you make a list of cars you like, post it and they can shot them down if they don't like them for some reason? there really is no such thing as a bad car if you buy it in good condition.

Avoid. Transmission issues, engine issues, and just plain silly issues.

How tall are you? How tall is your husband? Mazda is the only company that does not adjust there cars for the North American market at all. The Mazda 3 is built for someone about 5'3" tall. Any taller than 5'8" and your passengers head is jammed right against the roof, or worse on a sunroof model.

We looked at them when my wife, then girlfriend bought the Hyundai. The Mazda dealer refused to move on price, basically trashed me for saying my head hit the ceiling (sorry for being average NA height I guess), and acted offended when my girlfriend mentioned she was shopping around. "Your parents have bought here for years. Don't let a change in your life take away our relationship." BTW the change was me, and that was said right in front of our faces.

All that relationship at the dealer had done had seen her pour 4K into her Mazda Protege, which still had more front end issues, without seeing any improvement in the problems she was having.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I see. List of what I want, not brands I like. Gotcha. OK:

    Blue or black
26+ average MPG (since Civ gets 26 average, I figure it's replacement has to do at least as well)
    Automatic
    4 doors
Under $10K (but I would go higher for something perfect with low miles)
Less than 100K miles (but slightly above is OK if the price and condition are awesome)
Prefer never lived in a salt state
The less owners the better, no more than 3
No shady stuff like bad accidents or weird title stuff or whatever

Just hate the local dealer :p. Never seen a sales manager that rude or entitled. It was like he was scared of us test driving other cars against the Mazda 3. He kept throwing consumer reports in our face, which I pointed out to him rated my Tacoma as one of the worst vehicles on the road yet the Tacoma out sells just about everything Mazda makes and gets great reviews from it's buyers.

My cousin also had a late 2000's Mazda 3. He traded it on a GMC Sierra after a year due to transmission issues.

I'm convinced. Really never had a reason to like them anyway. Eric must have seen a good review of them recently, because he keeps bringing up Mazda as something to include in searches, and I keep saying no, I don't like them. Sweet, now I can say someone on TW told me they suck :D

EDIT: Plus, he is super freaking tall so that would never work for us anyway. I don't know how he tolerates the Civic even!
