I admit, with our constant wet weather, these issues do make me more nervous than if we were in a constantly dry climate. Same thing with the tires - you can't really take chances with your tread around here or you'll be hydroplaning all over the place. Now, ASK ME how I know that one : )

Learned that when I very first moved to Oregon. Hard way to realize driving the roads in Illinois is not the same ; )

OK, just talked to Honda parts. Not as scary of a total as I thought it would be. And we are not necessarily planning to buy the parts from them anyway, so this would be the worst case total, assuming nothing else is found wrong once we started taking stuff apart.

$80 for 2 CV boot kits (one for each side's outer boot) that include everything we'd need to replace them
$290 for 2 compliance bushings, one for each side

The bushings are a lot, but maybe they are something we could get aftermarket? The good news is Eric thought we had the kind that had to be pressed in, meaning machine shop costs or buy a whole assembly type thing for $$$, but the parts guy said since the Civ is so old (works to our advantage sometimes!), it has the old style kind that is some kind of a rod with a nut or something, bottom line - no machine shop or whole assembly needed. Parts guys is going to email me a few diagrams from the FSM to see what the hell he's talking about. Still sounds like it would be a bear of a repair, because Eric would have to take nearly the whole damn front end apart, but it also sounds like it could cause some sketchy drivability issues if we don't address it soon or replace the Civ.

Lots to talk about tonight. But I'm still in a good mood - after the calls to Toyota parts, this call felt like shopping at the dollar store!! :rofl:Best thing about the Civic - parts are CHEAP!!

@hetkind, what kind of fuel should we put in after this tank that has the Techron in it? Then change the oil after that tank you said, right?

Does anyone know anything about these compliance bushings? I asked the parts guy if letting them go could cause dangerous drivability issues, and he said if they are just cracked it's OK for a while but if they are totally trashed it could be dangerous. I wonder if they'd let me talk to that tech to see what he thought? Maybe I need to google them and see if we can look at them ourselves.........

just leave them alone and let eric take the truck to work from now on for the next few months until you get another car.

the car wont be going more then a few miles that way and no need to replace the compliance bushings that way.

this also means nothing else needs to be fixed other then the boots and maybe some used tires with good thread left (check facebook and craigs list and you will find them on there sometimes)

    problem solved

there is a good chance he was just saying they need replacing and other then high miles there is nothing wrong with them. the way it sounds I find it hard to believe he could have seen what they look like so at best maybe they only just have some play in them.

I have never fooled with CB so I cant advise you on it

    Go Jen!
Fix the Civic, just what it really needs, might be surprised, Hondas are pretty reliable, and I bet the value is starting to go up a little!
bldegle2 is giving you some great advice!
I get it, you need the Civic to go a little further while you save for a replacement, Little red will do!
Check e-bay, and Amazon for those bushings, should be a fair bit cheaper than the dealer, if they need to be done...

Jen, the compliance bushings can be had for much less on Fleabay, since this is not a new auto, go for the after market one...around $24 to $35 each, a huge savings over the dealer's price.....just sayin...

this is an old car and will not be around much longer, the Fleabay bushing will more than suffice for the short time it has left on the road...

    Sweet, thanks for the advice!!

I like getting stuff on Rock Auto (we don't use Ebay much). Just not sure what exactly to get, hopefully that Honda dude will email me soon and that will clarify exactly what we'd need. But surely we could get some cheap aftermarkets of those bushings on RA. Assuming Eric is comfortable doing the repair, which we definitely need to look closely at......sounds pretty involved considering what he'd be trying to work with tool wise and so forth. But he's got a bunch of time off coming up the next couple months, and I know he's definitely up for trying. I wish I could score a cheap or free FSM on that car. Haynes and Chilton are only so specific/useful.

eye on the prize here remember, your trying to do minimal repairs to make it last a few more months so the less you drive it the less you need to fix

nothing is going to fall off the truck, at best you will start to feel a little minor wheel shake and "then" you fix it because you have to, but odds are you wont have any problems at all over the next 6-8 months with it.

if you wanted to keep it another year or two then it makes sense to fix whats wrong but you have been driving it with all these same problems for years so its not like it all happened yesterday and the car still rolling along just fine.

if the compliance bushings are cheap and easy to replace then go for it but if it involves a lot then I would not bother with it.

lemmme see, there must be a youtube video "how to" on it, they have one for everything lol

Also, since they don't have to be pressed in, EZ peazy repair, just like the split boot solution....wish I was close by, this is something I could handle on a lazy day pounding brewski's for payment...

Oh good grief. These are the diagrams he emailed me. May as well be in Japanese for as much sense as it's making to me. Still clueless on what exactly we need.

    ok, here it is
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYjP9kYLdLQ

and its a lower control arm bushing, why the fuck the call it compliance is silly, anyway since that is what it is then yes I change my opinion and you should replace them, especially if they don't have to be pressed in.
