Alrighty, I have pics!! Compliance bushings, CV boots, bellow boots/tie rod boots, and tire tread pics.

Please help us decide how far gone these items are guys!! None of them are very expensive, and we do want to be sure it is safe for regular city and some interstate driving, ideally for a few more months. I realize this is not a Civic forum but I'm realizing a vehicle is a vehicle is a vehicle - names of parts may change, and even functions of parts may vary slightly, but ultimately it's the same shit on everything - Tacoma or Civic, semi or Corvette.

So let's hear whatchya think!! please and thank you TW!

    Here they come!:D

Here's the diagram that the compliance bushings were on. They are #8, #9.

EDIT: Here's what the replacement one would look like. Now as I look at both images, I'm wondering if we need to be looking at the condition of other side of this thing, where that rubber looking wheel shaped part is.

I'm pretty sure this is the outer CV boot, passenger side. It's leaking.

In the diagram, the boot is #19. We are considering getting the whole assembly (everything shown in pic), because it sounds like it would be a PITA to replace the CV boot(s) only.

The driver's side boot has a small crack/tear in it, but looks much better than the passenger side.

there is nothing wrong with those bushings unless the rubber is cracking and falling apart.

sure it might be a little worn where the rod goes through but unless it moves a lot with obvious slop when eric pushes and pulls on it from the side then scratch it off the list and you don't need to mess with them but they do look like it should only take a few minutes to replace them. if you aren't sure then take one off and see if the hole is wallered out in it. also take note the sway bar connection is to the right side of the two bolts on one and on the left side of the two bolts on the other so they are different so I don't know why the oem part numbers are the same for both of them???

also if you plan to keep the civic for another year or two (and you obviously do even if you haven't admitted it to yourself yet) then go ahead and replace the tie rod boot. this is how to replace it:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVQHgcXEhpE

and of course replace those cv boots

Been making some calls on aftermarkets of these items. What I'm gathering is that it's easier/more logical to:

    A) Replace the whole tie rod for just a small amount more, rather than just replacing the bellow boot/tie rod boot.

    B) Replace the whole CV shaft, and not just the outer CV boots.

Oreilly wants $140 for the left & right CV shafts. We could get both for $80 on RA including shipping, but the risk of getting the wrong thing always sucks. I'm calling at least one other local place.....

Oreilly wants $18 for the whole tie rod assembly that has the bellow boot. That's a bargain!

Eric thinks our compliance bushings look fine. We don't hear any noises at all when we're driving/turning, or have drivability issues, except he's has said sometimes it feels like the car is having "speed wobbles" when driving at interstate speeds. I wonder if that's just what it feels like to alternate between driving the Taco & driving the Civic though! I thought about calling Honda to ask why they thought those compliance bushings were shot, if there's something specific they noticed wrong with them. When I googled them, it looks like tons of Civic owners have reported prob's with them, but they were all reports on 2000's and newer it seemed. So I wonder if that tech is just so used to seeing them give out all the time that he was just making a general call or something? Not sure.

Been reading about compliance bushings - people are saying a symptom of them being bad is uneven wear on the tires. Pretty sure we have that going on. Shit. I wonder if something is messed up about them that isn't visible/obvious in those photos.......think I'm gonna call and see if I can talk to the tech about it.......

Why are you trying to spend more money than is necessary, replace the boots with split boots, no disassembly required...you are making phucking mountain out of a molehill...unless you feel like spending your hard earned, I thought you were trying to budget cash after the Taco money pit happening and start saving for another vehicle down the road...

as far as the tie rod boots go, do one side at a time, reassemble, make sure the steering wheel is in the same spot when reassembled so the toe stays the same, then do the other side, same thing...when you are done the toe should basically be the same as before so it is drivable...save your cash for an alignment and some used tires with better tread when done...your speed wobble could be tire balance, wheel alignment, poor struts or a combination of any and all...

the pics do not show anything major needed, go cheap...smile and be done with it...

Sorry to make a phucking mountain out of a molehill. Most of this shit makes zero sense to me, so I'm trying my best to understand what the phuck these parts do, whether they actually need replacing or not, and how much they cost.

Sorry, Jen, many previous posts have given you excellent information, your pictures do not show a totally messed up front end, just the normal tearing of boots and bellows...you don't need a whole axle shaft unless you are experiencing some problem presently with them, just new boots, the compliance bushings looks fine, you reported no clunks front end wise and you also stated it handles fairly well when driving...what you may need are new struts if they are ancient, ball joints could be getting a little worn, that is an easy check with front end jacked off the ground....

Keep your sight set on the ultimate goal, another year of usage at minimal costs so you can get that newer vehicle sooner than later....

None of those issues are going to make your vehicle unsafe to the point you fly off the road in a fiery crash! If it were mine(and I just know you're not gunna go for this) I wouldn't touch a damn thing besides newer tires, and drive the shit outta it.( if you plan to truly only have it a few more months)

    Solid advice↓↓↓↓

Let's be honest, and no offense meant Jen, but given what the OP was willing to spend to keep a Tacoma that is over a decade old it's not very surprising that she is willing to let this old Civic become a money pit too. This all reminds me of a person I know that drives older cars and is always under the hood with some problem. They rant and rave how nice it is not to have a car payment, but all of their used cars have over 5K into them... It doesn't make sense but hey, whatever makes them happy.
