that's a good song to send her to her death with but its also a great song to start the life of the new HRV. we all just listened to it and none of our computers broke so its not the CD that killed it.

take it with you and play it on the test drive to test the cars sound system and at the same time if the new car falls apart you know its the CD that did it and you can buy another one that isn't broken and "test" the jinx lol.

well its always easier to let go of a brick sitting in your yard that you cant drive rather then one that runs.

if you really are silly enough to get rid of the CD then send the CD to K to pay for that door handle

At least burn that disc to your computer so you can transfer it to a mini SD card for your new phone...Of course you won't need an SD card because you can send the music to your new car via bluetooth.

    TW!! We bought a Prius C!! :D

JK. We did drive one though - an extremely nice Toyota salesman talked us into it. We also drove a Yaris. And an HRV. As expected, pros and cons to all 3. So hard to choose!!!

Can you guys remind me (nicely please!! :)) of why you think the Prius is a bad choice? I know people have mentioned concerns with the battery life, and concerns over what actually happens to all those old batteries. What else? Aside from the perception that their drivers seem like pretentious a-holes!!

One of our big concerns with the Prius is - when the warranty runs out and the car gets older, and we are wanting to save cash by doing basic repairs at home, it's pretty scary to think of diving under the hood of that thing compared to a regular engine. So he's trying to research it a bit and see just how "out there" they actually are in terms of understanding how they work and being able to repair them.

By far, the biggest surprise to me of the day was my disappointment with the CVT transmission. Last night when Eric explained to me that the main noticeable diff. with a CVT is that you don't feel/hear the car shifting, I figured, who cares? Not me. Wrong!! Granted, it's likely we'll still wind up with something that has a CVT, as it seems nearly unavoidable in new smallish fuel efficient cars these days, but it definitely was disappointing. The Prius C and HRV have the CVT. It definitely makes for a more boring driving experience - not bad, just boring. I thought that didn't matter to me, but apparently it does? I suppose I'd get used to the CVT eventually......do any of you have a CVT?

Surprisingly, the 2015 Yaris still has a normal tranny, so in that regard, it was the most FUN car we drove today!! Tiny as all hell, too tiny to work for us I think (the brake & gas pedals were so tiny & close together that Eric's foot kept hitting both!!). But even with a 4 cylinder engine, at times it felt/sounded like a little race car the way it VROOMED from a stop, just because the car is so small and lightweight I guess?!?!?! Kinda felt like a teeny tiny version of the Taco at times. :D It felt like what driving the Civ feels like (had some OOMPF!!), but the interior was definitely modest and not as nice as the Civ's is. I WISH so badly that this car had just a wee bit more space inside and more secure feeling on the road (we were feeling some unsteadiness/sway on the interstate at 80mph), because it was fun to drive, cute, and very affordable. Just like the good points of the Civ. 99% sure it's out though. Cute + cost savings + fun to drive DO NOT make crashing because Eric accidentally steps on the brake & gas together worthwhile!!

The HRV was cool for sure. The various ways to configure the back seats was definitely a cool feature that we'd use a lot I think. The car felt like the perfect in between size - small enough to get great MPG, yet just big enough to feel comfortable in it, and even visualize a short-ish road trip's amount of stuff in there (along with our Dolly girl of course!). They were our 1st stop of the day. After driving it, we sat down to talk numbers with them, and I held my ground on the blue color (they only had grey). We were there for quite some time while they made calls to try to find a blue one, but they weren't able to. So we left with the intention of continuing to look for one ourselves, and they promised to keep trying also.

What do we do TW?????? What would you all pick of those 3 cars? Will you guys still be my TW buddies if we got a (gulp) hybrid?

well for starters the batteries will go bad and they cost almost as much as the whole car to replace them.

add to that it runs on gas 90% of the time and only runs on batteries when your driving under 30mph.

so the fuel economy is a lie since when running on gas it gets the same mpg or worse then other cars, I think 28mpg if I remember correctly.

as I mentioned before, don't go car shopping with a certain car in mind, just go look at "brands" you trust then choose those with the best mpg and have an affordable price tag.

Hybrids are a gimmick, they don't help the environment and the long term costs do not outweigh the seemingly short term savings.

I am not sure I could get a handle on this thing when it gets to the repair age. This video talks about the inner workings of the electric system.... https://youtu.be/UxuqHcUbSQ0

yep and that's just scratching the surface because im sure there are tons of other things insanely expensive not just in the battery system but the entire cars electrical systems and they are going to be impossible to troubleshoot yourself.

eric there is a reason why they call hybrids rich people cars, because while its not expensive to buy them, mainly because of government subsidies paid to manufacturers to keep the price low, but you have to be rich to own one because once its out of warranty, its cheaper to buy another one then pay someone to try to fix it.

good luck with the search but avoid and hybrids at all costs, I wouldn't take one if it was given to me for free because it even costs a fortune to scrap with the hazardous waste disposal costs and huge environmental hazard from those batteries

Sorry, couldn't make it past 3 minutes of the vid.

All the reasons listed about the negatives of hybrids are pretty much bull shit to me. As a matter of a fact there are some hybrids that are stupid fast. Almost instantaneous acceleration. I would love to run one of those things.

My biggest bitch about hybrids is how people claim that they are so much better because they use electricity and electricity makes no pollution. Bullshit! The electricity that gets used to charge the batteries had to come from somewhere. It came from a power generation plant. If you have a hybrid, you are still polluting the environment, but the pollution is not coming from the car, but you still are polluting.

I get to talk to some of my volunteer firemen quite a bit, they all take the 200 volts of electricity seriously when they roll up to an accident. I don't think it is enough of an issue to make a person not want to buy a hybrid, but it needs to be mentioned. Cars are dangerous no matter what kind was in an accident.

Carl, no one is going to throw out a dead hybrid battery. It would get recycled for big scrap dollars. I don't think the environmental hazard on hybrids is as bad as some people say.

Cars in general are an environmental nightmare.

One of my contractors is garbage hauler. One of their duties is to spot check the waste stream for hazardous materials. The number one item found in the trash is common, household batteries, mostly AA size. We have done estimations of the weight of the batteries that go to a landfill. I'm not allowed to give out company info, but the number is way north of several hundred pounds/yr. This is just at my work site alone.

The amount of dead batteries that are properly disposed at my work site would blow your mind. I wish I would have invested in disposable battery stocks when I was younger. We use disposable batteries for everything these days.

My little story, hopefully puts into context how bad we are already fucking up our environment. I have little doubt that these hybrid batteries pose much hazard to the environment.

I get that, but you buy a new tire and you pay $2 for hazardous waste disposal/recycle fee anyway and they sell them to recycle those as well so I can only imagine what the hazardous waste disposal/recycle fee is on a hybrid battery because I just don't know. what I do know is its not a system where anything you ever knew about cars can be of any use working on a system like that plus its a "possible" death by electricution hazard to work on them.

I just in good faith cant recommend someone buy an electric hybrid who cant buy the car as a disposable purchase knowing its going to be useless and valueless in 10-15 years and that's just based on nothing ever going wrong and just the batteries go bad (IE you gotta be rich to own one)

    Thanks for the input everyone!

We are really struggling to decide on a car. Keep going round and round, trying to identify exactly what we want.

To us, the main differences between the Prius C and the HRV were:

    1. HRV has AWD, Prius C doesn't.
    2. HRV is ~$21K and would have ~3% interest rate; Prius C is ~$18K and would have a 0% interest rate
    3. HRV would cost ~1.5 - 2x more in fuel over the life of the car than the Prius C
    4. HRV would be less intimidating to work on at home 10+ years from now when parts start failing on either car
    5. Interior looks/comfort seemed slightly nicer in the Prius C, although the back seat configuration options in the HRV were slightly better for Dolly :)
    6. HRV has a nicer looking exterior

It's sorta like 1 and 2 cancel each other out - having the AWD of the Honda or the cost savings of the Prius equal out in my mind.

Then 3 and 4 are a wash also - fuel savings vs. repair savings

And 5 and 6 are a wash too! Do we want a better looking car on the inside or the outside? :goingcrazy:

Ha!! And you guys thought I over-analyzed the Taco decisions!! Just look at us now!! :D

Thanks for hanging in there with us and offering your thoughts, TW. It is helpful to look at different perspectives on all of it, because it's a big decision for us!

    Happy Sunday TW!!!

Actually I could too. Except it's 7 years older than the current Honda, so I'm thinking probably not a wise decision. :D
