Hey y'all, just bought a 2009 Tacoma with some rusting and faded paint on the roof. Guy I bought from suggested putting a rhino spray on it after sanding. Has anyone tried this? How's it look? Any better options?

That's what happens when you don't have a garage to park in. Lol. I have to touch up my 06. I'm going to do some light sanding and paint over it. It's easy to do a decent job and even then it's on the roof so you won't really see it anyways.

I would sand it down and put vinyl over it if you want the cheapest way.

I wouldn’t attribute it to parking outside as just owner neglect a properly washed, waxed or sealed truck wouldn’t have done that.

thats also true. I try my best to wash and wax every so often. But sometimes it’s hard to keep up when family life takes over time..lol

That’s what happens when you don’t take care of it, outside had nothing to do with it. The roof has to be washed and waxed too.

I’ve owned my 2005 since new. Always washed and waxed. My roof looked worse than that. Had it painted and now my hood is starting to peel.

BS on the wax crap its the low quality clear coat that Toyota used. Look around at all the 8-10 year old fader/peeler Tacomas!
My 09 hood and roof just started to look like crap and peel and it was taken care of washed and waxed.
Rhino lining or Line X is an option as well as wrap it and all done at a shop are not cheap. Quote for $750 roof and hood wrapped and I can buy 5x25' of wrap for $135.
A full paint job is way too much in the 3-4k range so I'll sand and prime it myself soon then decide on a matt black wrap or spray/roll on bedliner.

My truck is an 06 and it doesn't look that bad. It's caused by the sun and the fact that it is a black truck. But regular wash and wax would make a difference.

Depends what your goals/budget are here. The more details you can provide us, the better. How's the rest of the paint on the truck?

i would just sand and repaint it.. its on the roof anyways, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Fair. I'm trying to do something relatively inexpensive that won't compromise the look and will get rid of the potential rust problem. Sounds like a sand and spray is cheapest, but I worry about diminishing my resale value

    Diminishing resale value from sanding/repainting?

If it were me, I'd stick to a sand and repaint. Now depending on how you go about this (DIY vs Auto Body Paint Shop) will drastically vary your cost. Like Timinatorx92 mentioned, the good thing is it's on the roof so anyone other than an NBA player isn't going to notice whether or not it's been restored back to showroom condition.

This right here. ^^ A good QUALITY paint job would not be fading like that in as little as 5 years. My 2012 roof is okay but it has a small tiny area of rust chips on the roof close to where the interior sunglass holder has been spot welded. It's not coincidence, it's poor prep work and crappy ass lightly layered paint which couldnt hang on more than a few years before it came off.

Washing and was has nothing to do with these fading roofs at all.

Yeah, as in I wouldn't want it to be too noticeable that it's done by hand. BUT to your point it's on the roof. So, spray paint then I gather. Any brands y'all would suggest? (sorry, very new to this)

Do a bedliner that you can add tint to and color match it. I’ve seen some pics a guy did on a land cruiser and it looked great.

DIY respray with rattle can is a waste of time. The rattle can clear coat will probably fair worse than the OEM paint. Only rattle can I’d consider is 2k clear coat over the color coat, and that requires a respirator and good ventilation.

    OME and worth every penny.
roofs fail before hoods from wind buffeting, not skipping the roof on wax day. It's always where they fail first.
