My truck has no issues, but you must of missed all the threads saying it was a gutless minivan motor with no torque below 4000 rpm’s, and how the Toyota should of just continued the 4.0 because it runs circles around the 3.5

People shoulda woulda gotta manual. I have no issues with torque as long as I run it up to 3000 rpm in low gear. Also, people tend to get outta my way when I do this cause it sounds like I'm getting ready to launch to the moon, especially once I clear 4000 rpm.

Mini-van motor my ass. People should do one of two things. View it as a truck motor that's used in mini-vans and quit yer bitchin' or dump your 3rd gem to buy another truck and quit yer bitchin'. Jesus. Doesn't anyone test drive vehicles before purchase anymore or do the sheep just follow the crowd in any given moment?

I have not. Both are gutless and essentially the same motor

Can confirm. I have owned both (2014, and 2017). 4.0 was nice at low RPM but wheezy and lacked power above 3k RPM. 3.5 was in fact a gutless minivan motor with no torque. Schizo transmission didn't help either.

Haven't tested the 4th gen (not in market, I got a Tundra instead) so I can't comment if it's better or not - but my Tundra 3.4TT blows my former Tacos away in both comfort and power.

I went and sat in one yesterday. I didn't ask to drive it, but I liked most of the layout. Except the back seat. It's still not that great for room, with the same dam angles. It is what I don't like in the Tacoma, I end up riding in the back once in awhile. That said the front seats seemed good, and I liked the layout of the dash. It seemed to get rid of the cruise engagement stick on the model I sat in. This one had a sub behind the back seat so it lost some storage. All and all of I was in the market for one I may have bitten. Price tag yah it's high, but what isn't. My issue is I learned my lesson on the first year after a design change, not going there again. My '16 had enough quirks and I'm really happy with my '21. I still kinda miss my '04. But that one had the higher trim package. I'm not sure why but I liked the electronic diff lock even though I only used it a couple times mostly pulling a boat up a ramp without engaging the transfer case when it was covered in slimy moss.
But the '24 front seats are definitely a win.

The engine has loads of torque if you just rev it hard!

Now imagine having the torque available at 1700rpm. With a manual or without, that’s a HUGE improvement over the 3.5

What I wish for the 4th gen, is a 6cyl turbo. I'd buy that in a heartbeat! But I'm guessing that'll never happen since Toyota wants to protect the Tundra branding.

Congrats, you'll love the Tundra ! Tacoma is great if you don't need backseats for passengers.

So after owning two 4.0 V6 2nd gens (both automatic) and two 3.5 V6 3rd gens (1 auto, 1 manual) and now to a 4th gen, I'll say I do not miss the V6's at all. The turbo 4 will do everything you need and be more powerful in most cases.

Now, the 8 speed automatic does shift a lot, not sure why people are saying it does not. However it is much smoother than the outgoing 6 speed auto.

People comment on the noise of the 4 banger. It honestly isn't that bad, I actually like it. But the die hard V6 guys will constantly bash it. Smaller forced induction engines are here to stay and there's nothing you can do about it.

I test drove one yesterday. Went by the dealer to look inside for the first time, and to test out the manual they had on the lot. Unfortunately, they were changing a lock actuator on the drivers door, so couldn’t get a feel for the 6 speed.

He offered taking a spin in an auto just to get a feel for the new engine, and I was really impressed. I really liked the new interior layout, the controls, and infotainment system (on the premium audio at least). The engine felt great, I really like that low end grunt. I wanted to hold out for the iForce max, but I think I’ll be really happy with the base engine and a stick shift.

I told my grandfather this morning that I messed up checking one out, because now I think I might get a TRD OR with the manual trans later this year

I just want the fan whoosh on startup, so everyone on the block knows my Toyota truck is starting up.

There are 3 4Runners, a few Tacomas, and an FJ in our neighborhood, so we get lots of 1GR startup road around here.

It is. I love the new power, and I am coming from a 4.0 V6.

Oh man! Bummer you didn't get to try out the manual. My wife wants to trade in her Honda for a 4th gen, but she doesn't like to drive stick. (I love it when she does drive my manual Taco. Something about a woman driving a manual that just gets me). So I'll prob be in the market for an auto. I was thinking of the Sport, but will probably stick with the SR5 simply because of sticker shock.
