Wait for the RR2 (or buy from eBay). The maestro for a 3rd gen actually runs the radio and the RR has problems with rebooting the radio randomly. Exactly why I upgraded to RR2, I had the RR before. It’s worth it. Get the one on eBay or wait for crutchfield. There are other places that have it too, I bought from eBay due to price, not availability.

Another thing i thought of the other night, what are the chances that Kenwood will release a newer updated system soon? this 1057 has been out 2 years already. I checked Kenwood's YouTube page and didnt really see any upcoming releases. Im not sure what their upgrade cycle is tbh

Not sure, but it’s just a head unit. Not a lot of exciting things with each new release. They’ve superseded my DMX957XR with the DMX958XR and I’ve had it for 3 years and it wasn’t new when I got it. I don’t even know what the differences are between those two. Whatever is better, it would have to be extremely minor.

RR2 is worth the wait. The RR randomly rebooting the radio is annoying AF.

Good to know, thanks. Doesn’t sound like I’m missing out on much at all.

Honestly, i like the 957XR more, the tilt face is nice since it sticks out, whereas the 958XR is more sunken in

Compared to a Philco AM/FM unit I had in a Mustang II, anything after 2013 is amazing.

If any of you guys with an OEM Apple CarPlay HU decide to upgrade - PM me. I might be interested in your stock HU. My 17 doesn’t have CarPlay and it would be a sweet upgrade

Its funny you say that because I was just about to ask if there is much interest out there in a newer stock head unit. I have a 2021 and am considering changing out my HU. Does anybody know if there is anything special that needs to be done in order to transfer ownership of a HU, like a code or a PIN that would need to be used to activate it on a different ride?

I've seen people selling them in the marketplace so i doubt there'd be anything special, may be wrong tho.

Does anyone know why Toyota did away with the Entune suite? The headunit literally has no apps on it now.

    _____________

Also - I just took my first roadtrip in the Tacoma. I have to do something about the JBL HU. I have a sunroof and had the windows down most of the trip and it is impossible to hear Siri read back your text messages over the wind noise with the windows down. Like it infuriates me that there is no option to turn the volume up on her voice or to have it come through all the speakers instead of the tweeters. I'm getting fired up just thinking about it. And i can't decided on an aftermarket replacement. I am just really unsure about the floating style HUs like the DMX 1057xr and the Stinger Heigh10 isn't going to cut it either. ugh. And theres really no 9" HU's out there (with knobs) that will fit flush in my Tacoma. Im frustrated to say the least. There has got to be a fix for this JBL system and the text messaging Fu*k up. ugh.

So is that volume issue the same as say you were listening to music and had google maps back at you in the background - you can’t have the music at one volume and the maps at another? The original HU in my 2017 allows that now

I’m not sure I 100% understand the OP’s problem, but my problem was that maps/Siri was limited to a much lower volume, and music could go much louder. The real problem from there was that the head unit would not turn down the music at all, so it would speak the maps volume at a lower volume than the music, and it would speak them both at the same time. If your music was loud enough to listen to, you couldn’t hear the maps at all and the maps made your music sound terrible because it spoke during the music. It was fully dumb.

I’m not really sure about maps only being on tweeters or whatever, that has been how maps was in other vehicles and maybe it is in my Tacoma, if so it’s not a problem. The problem for me was maps being limited to volume 7 and going at the same time as the music without either pausing or lowering the music volume beforehand.

Nah i used Waze yesterday it faded out the music/podcast to give me navigation appropriately. I'm strictly talking about Siri reading back my text messages. I have her at max settings, and have tried every "fix" available online (please see previous posts lol). Its such BS i cant even stand it.

Well all, I am in the same boat, I am leaning to swapping out the whole entire JBL system, its good at low volumes and grocery getting. I am leaning now to replacing the head unit. I have researched the Kenwood retains the most with the Tacoma. I wanted to retain the factory SOS option as well but not sure it does that. So, it looks like the HU will be the 1st thing to replace on my end since I have the 8" screen on the 23. I just can't downsize there. I will probably wait till the new year to see if Kenwood does any upgrading on their headhunts.

Originally I wanted to keep the factory HU and go with the PAC AUDIO to add external amps and speaker, but PAC AUDIO has not tested the 22-23 Tacoma years.

Only thin I do not like about the Kenwood is that the unit sticks out. Other than that it looks good feature wise.
