    Sup fellas.

So I had a Tacoma and want to get back in the game. Long story short I randomly had my car appraised (stick civic hatchback 2019) and Carvana offered 22,000 on it and I was blown away since I only paid 21,500 otd and put 39,000 miles on it already. I knew since it was worth so much I wanted to get back in a Tacoma. But trick was finding manual. I found one locally: 31,250 for trd off road 1 owner dcsb (dealer) but kicker is 94,000 miles. Am I dumb for paying 31,250 for a truck with 94,000 miles on it? Don’t have the capital to spend on a brand new one with dealer fees etc etc it’s another 10k at the least. Plus if the dealer matches my trade offer I can save on taxes. I can also buy one private party 3hrs away same year but 42,000 miles but it’s 35,000, and I don’t save on taxes so really it’s closer to 7k difference. Any ideas please help!

I mean truck prices are high these days and tacos dont lose much resale value. Im sure that the truck has a lot of life left in it.

Personally, i was fixated on Tacoma when i bought mine but i should have just gotten an older truck with 4x4. What about an old ford or jeep for like 10 grand?

Great option! But I want something that’s gonna last forever! And needs to be able to tow decently.

$31,250 is about what I payed for my 2014 Sport new. That being said it seems to be the current market price. Can you wait another year. Talking head on TV said used vehicle prices have come down a bit.

No, because I think you already know this isn't a good idea, and you're on the fence about signing the paperwork. Especially with gas prices climbing and no end in site. You have a newer lower mileage, reliable car, I'd stick with what you have and wait for the market to cool off.

The market forces at work are impacting your Civic and the prospective Taco similarly so there’s nothing “dumb” about the price of the Taco. The issue you run into is that the Taco price spike is higher than for a lot of other vehicles right now for a variety of reasons. All you can do in your decision matrix is figure out if the difference you’ll have to spend to change vehicles is worth it to you. If you’d be taking a loan out, rates are low so that’s an item in your favor (and also a piece of the market forces driving up prices).

Sounds like you’re already considering the tax break you would get if you trade your current vehicle in, compared to the potential better price you’d get from a private buyer.

    Oh look, another mod....

I won't try to talk you out of it. I'm going to try to talk you into it. I'll be the devil on your shoulder!

Do it! Buy it. After you buy it, throw on a bunch of after market parts that you don't even need like: TRD Pro grille, Raptor lights, a bad ass steel bumper and tires! Oh myyyyyyyy, the tires will have to be done. With matching rims of course. Get all the mod's that piss off the masses on this site (see other thread for that list).

You'll be the belle of the ball in your used truck as you cruise down your neighborhood. Just think about all the "Sup" nods you'll get from the men in your neighborhood. It'll be our way of saying "Damn man, nice truck, we envy your ass!"

Don't just buy it for you, buy it for the guy who has to live vicariously through you!

I’d pay 4K more for a 1/3 of the miles if it was me. You will miss the mileage your civic gets in comparison. If you have a short commute it’s not to big of a deal.

IMHO I wouldn't pay top dollar for a swap that would get you into something with almost 3x the miles compared to what you have now. The Civic is a good reliable vehicle with comparatively low miles and you don't have an urgent need for a truck. You can get back in the game a bit further down the road when things settle a bit more and Tacos with lower miles (or new) are more plentiful.

Well to be fair my car is worth 5k more than it should be as well. I know sell high buy high… my car is impacted almost just as much as the Tacoma as I feel this car 2 years ago wouldn’t be less than 26k. My commute to work is also 5 miles each way. Already bought a house so no more big expenses unless I have some shit leak…

Won’t my trade be worth like 5k less than it is now? (When I took it to carmax 5 months ago I got offered 17,000 then I took it a week ago and they offered 20,500.

Depends on the market, but most likely yes. The truck would also cost you $5,000 less (in theory), so the net result is the same now or then in regards to the net price difference you'd actually pay. My objection is to the mileage on the truck, and suggested waiting until supply catches up a bit so you have more choices with less miles. In the end it's your money and your choice, but personally I wouldn't feel warm and fuzzy about a vehicle with almost 100k miles that I didn't really know the history of, and paying top dollar for it.

Keep the Honda and buy an older 1/2 ton 4X4 truck. Tacoma's, especially those with manuals are poor tow vehicles. The money you save on gas driving the Honda as an every day driver will make the payments on a used $10,000-$15,000 truck.

While Tacoma's are legendary for lasting a long time people forget that there are a lot of Chevy and Ford 1/2 tons out there from the 1990's and early 2000's with 300,000+ miles on them that are still running just fine.

Yeah that’s exactly my point, the rising tide of prices is floating both your vehicle value and that of the Taco. So to some degree it’s a wash.

LOL mine's not going anywhere for a while. I bought it back in May of this year and paid just over $37k for it, which was about $2,500 below MSRP. Now my dealership has a $4k market adjustment on all their trucks. I got it just in time.

imo this is a safer bet in the near term financially (1-3 years) if it checks all your boxes. Although I'd go with the 2.0T and AWD at $25k for resale and smiles.

That being said.. I'm a fan of the Taco and with 67k miles (~10k of that towing) it feels no different than new.
