I also have zerk fittings on my 2012 Prerunner drive shafts. Three to be exact: One at the transmission, one after the center support bearing and one at the differential.

As per your information you have a 4X4 and you will have two more on the front drive shaft. So you missed two on the front shaft.

Three on the rear drive shaft plus two on the front for a total of Five Zerk Fittings for a four wheel drive Tacoma.

Just did this on a 2002 and my own 2011.

The 2002 stepside had 6 Zerks. It had NOO lube at all. Nothing but clean grease came oozing out. Crazy it was so dry.

My 2011 has a Dana Spicer Driveline... And is not the same. Each joint only has 1 zerk, instead of multiple. I did the first 3. Then there are two more above the transfer. The forward 2 are inside the knuckles, not on the sides like the rear 3. And, the further back front zerk is hiding behind the rock guard.

    Hmm.

Before WWII. It's really old school. I asked my dad once when I was little (a long long time ago).

Overgreasing is the leading cause of failure in bearings in HVAC stuff...don’t know about automotive.

This is an easy maintenance job I recommend everyone do. I can feel a big difference with daily driving

Yeah that’s not really comparable. These are designed so the new grease pushes the old crap out so if you overgrease all you do is be wasteful.
Imho Toyota cheaped out by not putting a zerk on the slip yoke (4x4 models).
It dries out and combined with the axle wrap can make for some super annoying clunking or lurching sensation.
I drilled and tapped mine for another zerk when I replaced the carrier bearing

@hx989 pics of the zerk you installed...? I'm waiting on a carrier bearing and bellows clamps before I rebuild mine.

Got some U-joints from Tacoma Parts Deal (man dealing with them was...still is painful). They sent joints (Spicer) without zerk fittings. I have a 2010 4x4 currently with zerks. Called local Toyota and they don't sell grease-able U-joints either. Not excited to put the new ones in, but taking the gamble on "OEM" non-grease-able vs aftermarket grease-able. Not sure why they would be moving a way from a grease-able U-joint.
