I did the strap already but that washer is a good idea as well, thanks!

Whoever came up with the washer mod for the tailgate is brilliant. I installed mine today.

Hose clamp idea failed to keep my tailgate. It was stolen on the 8th of this month. Down another +500.00 this was the second time my tailgate was stolen and exactly one week shy of a year.

God that sucks. May I suggest investing $50 to $150 (depending on how fancy you want to get) on a locking tailgate handle?

The locks internals tend to bind up after rains and dirt road driving. The best idea yet I think was the washer trick and a bit of welding.

I've sold a ton of these in the past (pop n lock brand) and they will only keep the good guys out. If you want to steal a gate that is equipped with a pop n lock all it takes is a compact cordless drill and literally 10 extra seconds to steal. As far as preventing your gate from being stolen, the washer and hose clamp combined is about as good as it will probably get.

just a thought, with all the talk about the tailgates on here thieves might be getting ideas.

Coming from honda's and honda forums, the thieves browsed the forums to keep ahead of the game. (This is why non of my security mods, fuel kill switches, etc are shown here).

It would be wise to switch out the tacoma tailgate bolt for a different head. They might start carrying the torx bolt size if this washer thing starts to catch on. Maybe fill it in with some epoxy or jb weld. That way you can remove it with time if you need to by dremeling out the epoxy or whatever, but would not allow the thief the oppertunity to just loosen a bolt or clamp and go.

:( That sucks! I guess if somebody really wants the tailgate there isn't much you can do to stop them. I did washers on both sides with a hose clamp that has the head drilled off.

If I were you I would keep your eyes on craiglist you might just find the prick that stole your tailgate.

these thieves need a group of us Taco owners to beat the living shit out of them! Pisses me off. My Tacoma sits in the garage and is only driven fridays and saturdays but I go to Races, Rodeos, the lake, shit even the mall it could get jacked. I put EZ clamps on mine and the washer but I thought....those assholes read these forums they can drop $3 and get EZ clamps to use the key. Sucks

I did it too, but it caused that keyhole piece to bind when I tightened the bolt. Did you use a smaller washer as a spacer or not completely tighten it or what?

Front (2.75" total): 1.6" Eibach coils, Toytec 0.5" (L) & 0.25" (R) top plate spacers, 5100's @ 0.85", Built Right uniball UCA's, Differential drop, Removed sway bar Rear: TSB springs, Wheeler's 1.5" AAL, 5100's, 2* shims, Carrier bearing drop, F and R Spidertrax, 285/75-16 Goodyear Duratracs, Self-fabbed sliders, rear bumper, and skid plates, Cobra 75 CB, Bed lined slim lo-pro tool box, Bed Extender, Diff breather mod, Two tail gate security mods, Exhaust dumped behind axle, Can't leave shit alone so plenty more coming...
If somebody wants my tailgate bad enough, they're going to get it and I'm not going to stop them. However doing these mods has greatly reduced the risk of a stolen tailgate.

If they try mine and fail, I doubt they'll bust out any special tools. They'll just move on to the next Tacoma that doesn't have the security features. It's not like our trucks are rare. I'm sure at virtually all times, there is another Tacoma within a mile of mine that has a tailgate waiting to be taken.
