Just make sure that you have the hose clamp in place before you remove the bolt holding the cable (in the Lowe's parking lot)

New guy here, lookin for info about stolen gates.

I had my gate stolen with a pop and lock on it that WAS LOCKED. Didnt even think about the hose clamp idea until someone told me about it.

I got my gate replaced by my insurance (thank god for zero deductible comp insurance). Now I have another pop and lock, hose clamp, and the washer on the cables trick.

The problem im having is with the washers. I cant tighten the bolts down all the way because the cables wont move when open/close the gate. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a remedy? I have the thinnest washers I can find and it still isnt enough.

    Any help?

    Thanks!

I had the same problem with the washers, spent a good 45 minutes at the local Ace Hardware playing with different washers. When I tighten the bolt, the cables loose their movement.

If you could find a washer that was the same size as the inner sleeve of the bolt, (the flat section the cable hoop sits on) you could widen the space that remains open for the cable and thus giving the additional play needed.

I'll be working on this in the coming weeks, if I discover a fix I'll let you know.

I installed the clamp and used liguid nails over the head. I tried the washer but when the bolt is tight the cable end binds and won't move. Is this the way they are when the washer is installed?

Buy a split washer for a 1/4 inch bolt, (take the whole assembly inside the hardware store just to make sure it will work) The washer fits the inside of the quick release cable bracket.

The inside hole of the washer is too small to fit the cable bolt. Use a 5/16 drill bit to enlarge the inside of the washer. I held the washer with vice grips, be sure to clamp across the split section of the washer to keep the washer from spreading apart while drilling.

Here is a picture of a drilled out washer next to an untouched washer. You can see where I held the washer.

The drilled out washer extends the shoulder of the bolt. When you bolt the cable back on the truck, place the large (anti theft) washer on the shoulder of the bolt as you did before, and the new split washer on the inside. The cable quick-release bracket will rest on the washer and have the needed room to move about without binding.

Guess I'll break down and do the cable lock mod so I'll have the full set of tailgate theft deterrant mods.

I have been everywhere trying to find these clamps with the key. No luck. Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart. Auto stores. Nothing, anyone tell me maybe a place online I can get them.

+1 on the Bully Tailgate Lock. It's a little more secure than the hose clamp mod, but with an integrated padlock so I can remove the tailgate easily. Took the tailgate off this weekend in seconds so I could load a large freezer in the bed so it's come in handy already.
