I'll raise you one... When I had kids in diapers, on road trips this compartment was invaluable. Also nice if you ever have leftover food on the trail and don't want it to stink up the cab.

I like keeping straps in mine. Very useful.

I assume they gave you the sliding 4 tie downs?

My guess is too many people complained about them, because anything you store in them gets wet and dirty. Lots of people including myself keep ratchet straps in there. Needless to say mine are all rusting out because of the salt water that get in there from winter. Anyways this probably gave them bad survey feedback and instead of Toyota saying “How can we make this better?” They simply thought doing so would cost more money they simply eliminating it. Although that doesn’t explain why they left the small one on the right.

IMO it’s a stupid idea to take it away, and even stupider idea to leave one side with it still. Makes me wonder if they tucked something under the bed on that side and had to eliminate it because of that now?

When I took it out to install the seal kit, it was pretty basic. I'm sure you can obtain one from a wrecking yard or dealer and add it back (just like the front rail) if you really wanted it. Once they are properly sealed... they are great. I store my straps and net in there.

I used mine for stuff I didn’t like and wanted to make moldy.

Nice idea, I guess.. but everything that went in that wasn’t metal turned to shit with quickness.

For the people who don’t want the safety crap the 17’s are definitely the way to go.

They seize and rust ratchet straps as well. Atleast here in the salt belt

Bought mine as I knew the TSS stuff was coming and didn’t know what to think of it.

But if someone wants to give me a solid price for my 2017, I’ll go buy a 2019

I simply put my stuff in a sealed bag and then in the compartment, no mold or dirt.

A lot of people here are turned off by it as it effects things like changing out a grill, doing a lift, and just adding more to the cost of truck. These obviously can be worked around, but to some here they’d rather not even deal with it.

The big seller to me on a 18 or 19 would be being able to get the black leather in the TRD’s. But if I’m selling my truck, im not going to get another Tacoma.

Have had a few trucks(chevys, gmc’s) before the Tacoma and personally, I love the usefulness of the cubbies. Disappointed they got rid of one of their differentiators from the rest of the market.

    Not me.

I had a shell that kept the bed dry and clean, storage compartments in said bed have no business being wet, damp, and filthy.

I don’t have issues that the covers aren’t sealed and so in an open bed configuration that water will get in, but such isn’t the case.

They’re poorly designed, if you have to wrap everything in plastic or have some sort of container inside a container.

There are other ways to allow water to escape them and mitigate dust, dirt, and mold. Like basic rubber plugs that would allow any owner to decide for themselves if they want moisture to escape or if they want to keep dust out.

They may be poorly designed but only takes me a few seconds to put my rope and tow straps in a bag, I really like having the storage compartments

Mine are full of stuff that I didn’t want in the cab. I bought the bed cubby covers and sealed the doors. I also store anything that I really want to protect in ziplock bags.

Being cheap? Didn't they have to redesign the new pocket-less bed?

Since that cost a lot of money... Bed is still same dimensions, maybe a slight cost to retool but I would guess over time they'll save money not including the pocket and door, latches for door, etc.
