Sometimes nothing happens when I turn the key

Have a gremlin that popped up a couple times a month or two ago but left me stuck for 30 minutes at the grocery store today.

I put the key into the ignition and turn it but nothing happens, no lights, no starter etc. In the past I'd just remove the key and do it again and it would work.

Weird thing today was the dome lights wouldn't come on with the doors open either. Tried removing the key several times and cycling but nothing. Prior to calling the wife or AAA I tried one more time and it worked.

Any ideas on what electrical gremlin I have?

 

First thought would be a loose ground

 

Loose ground, check your battery connections make sure they're good, not corroded to hell, etc. Most likely something simple unless you've done a lot of aftermarket wiring to the truck

 

Sometimes it feels like needles when I pee.

 

I think that's down to personal choices

 

Think your battery might be on its way out.

Automatic not solidly in Park perhaps?

 

Any modifications…check you key fob battery also .

 

Just had a new battery put in.

I'm going to check all the connections and retighten them and the ground.

 

1) Turn your headlights on then try starting it , the lights dim its the battery and if the light don't dim then it's your starter


2) try starting it in neutral if it's an auto or if a manual trans push hard on the clutch pedal . If the engine starts and is an auto your Neutral safety switch is bad . If the manual trans starts your clutch safety switch is bad

 

Checked all the connections and they’re tight.

when I came out to the truck earlier I was able to unlock it with the fob.

wasn’t able to shift it into neutral even with the key in and turned forward. I’ll try that again if it does it.

battery is new and connections are good.

I do have some aftermarket accessories attached but they’ve all been on a while.

When I went out to take these pics it started up no issue.....

 

Define modifications as that's a broad subject based on everything on TW.....

Electrical I have the following added:

ARB dual compressor
Hidden light bar
LED lights in my shell

 

Just a thought. Even though battery is new, but what if it is defective?

 

The issue happened a couple of times before the new battery. I feel like if it was the battery it would happen on a more regular basis. There’s no pattern for when it happens.

 

These trucks are sensitive to electrical mods, l vaguely recall another member having gremlins due to camper shell lights.

 

have you looked at your disconnect terminal? Is it tight and connecting well? Is it a cheap unit from Amazon or a quality one?

 

push that clutch all the way down

 

OP has SR5 so no MT available, unfortunately...
