    ^ Ditto.

Last summer I did the Ancient Bristle cone pine tree forest. I came in on Wyman creek road (a powerline road) 2WD passable. Spent two days hiking and visiting the groves of trees. Exited Inyo through Silver Canyon rd. (scary shelf road) 4x4 mandatory. After refueling in Bishop, I could not resist the lure and opportunity to travel the entire length of Saline Valley, so I did.

I recommend staying the F away from DV until the cooler weather arrives.

I am unfamiliar with Coyote flats.

Here's a shot of Silver Canyon Road.

It's a deceptive roller for a while. Then it gets steep with some turns requiring backing.

But the view from the top is worth it.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think early September is late enough.

Seeing the DV report makes me miss the place.

I lost the grill somewhere along the road to the Race Track.

I have to say, I like trips that include more than just wheeling. DV has a huge amount of history. I'd go again in a heart beat.

My thoughts exactly, as much as I want to see what my truck well be able to do I really want to get out and enjoy the area around here as it was intended to be seen. I think bristlecone sounds like a pretty good bet as for early September. Sound good to everyone else? I'll just have to see what I can and can't do before getting to far into things.

Starts around the end of November. Winter is popular. But summer is more popular with the Germans :D

I think it's because they're looking for extremes and hot as balls is it in North America.

Once everything gets planned out I'd be in! I've never been to Coyote Flats, but from what I could find about it the trails look reasonably flat and simple, however the hikes and exploring seem to be pretty fun...

Actually just got back from a fishing trip in Mammoth/Bishop and would love to go back!

I was talking to one of my riding buddies yesterday about Brown's Campground in the Owens River area (5mi or so east of Bishop). Looks like a great location that would allow for trips to several areas. Bristlecone Pines, Coyote Flats or other places. It's not free but it's out of the way and offers all the goodies you could possibly need. Including a fairly central location that would allow people to go where they wanted during the day and meet up in the evenings. Brown's Owens River.

Personally, I'm not really looking for campground living. My ideal would be to cruise into some nice country then just set up camp wherever. I'm not looking for hardcore wheeling, moreso just enjoying camping. As my truck is integrated into my camping rig, once I'm set up then I can't use it for cruising. I'm all geared up with everything except a place to crap. Worst case scenario, I have a shovel and know how to use it. Or worst-worst case scenario, there are always 5-gal buckets and trash bags!

Yes. Remote / Primitive / Dispersed camping is what I always strive for. Satellite imagery has been a wonderful tool in finding unique places to camp away from everything else. :)

+1 here, a nice rough road into some remote area to camp, hike and get dirty. I had first heard of bristlecone for the backpacking soooo that's where I would like to go.
