This guy has got to be trolling. I don't think there is a more controversial discussion question on TW.

Not taking the bait on this one, I'll let you guys feed.

The 3rd Gen is the best selling Tacoma to date, period.Up to you if you want one.

Mine's a turd, broke a few times already. Toyota warranty didn't cover... I learned to deal with it. Just saying.

Word on the street is that the manual ones are built better because they know that they were actually gonna be driven hard. And they dont search for gears. And word on the street is that driving a manual transmission increases testosterone levels..

    So theres that..

Isn't a new truck tranny in the learning mode anyway, so won't it shift different as others have reported after some mileage ???

I swear its universal. My wife throws in a little added zest though typically claiming that if we eat at (again, insert literally anywhere I suggest here) we will get food poisoning. Umm, OK, then where do you want to eat honey? I don't know, that's why I asked you...and on and on it goes.... 25years this October and damn I love that woman!

    No, they showed me.

Showed me that for some reason a company that builds fine automatics in their other vehicles somehow has a brain fart when it comes to the new Tacoma.

If/When Toyota gets it right I'll get one if I haven't moved on by then.

I'm glad others have gotten good running units.

If the first one I tested would have been good, I probably would have bought it (Inferno OR, man it was sharp) but it was before the updates and it was quite frankly terrible.

It focused my attention on that quirk.

After driving that one, I am now kind of in the "Once it has been seen it cannot be unseen" phase.

The 2017 I drove was much improved, but still there.

I'm sure Toyota is not losing sleep over my single non-purchase.

Maybe the new ZR2 coming in just a few weeks will wake them up though.

I like that. Only problem is that the wifey want's to have the ability to drive it once in a while and is not willing to learn to drive a stick. Trust me, I would not mind having another car at home with a manual that she never touches :) Plus I would not want her testosterone to increase. hehe

One of the prerequisites of my then girlfriend turning into my fiancé was that she needed to learn how to drive manual. Now all four vehicles we own are manual transmission.

I actually like the fact that she can't drive my manual miata. I have everything setup just the way I want and it drives me nuts when I get into the truck after she drove it and have to readjust everything again. Plus this way I don't have to worry about her crashing/denting/damaging the miata. It will be the same when I get the hellcat.

Weird. I actually like the fact that my wife can drive my 600hp Soarer comfortably. Also can drive the Tacoma without scratching it because its "too big", and knows how to park her Manual BMW wagon away from morons who would door ding it. Its pretty nice when you can depend on a companion to move a car, or take a car somewhere when you're not around.

Yeah, I rather just not even worry about it. The jeep and taco are both lifted with sliders, so she can park it where ever she wants as the dumbasses that open their door into them will just hit the sliders. And her lexus is all her's.

About a week and 1k miles into ownership so far, I have noticed no issues with transmission gear-hunting, power, noisy diff howling, bitching, or whining. It's not a fucking chipped F250 turbodiesel that can spin tires in 2nd gear, it's a little half-ton pickup that's getting 22mpg for me. It has more than enough power to drive, and I've already loaded it up with ~1 ton of IT gear twice for work and it handled fine loaded. I'm happy. You probably will be too, if you don't let the naysayers get under your skin.

As for ACTUAL failures and not just bitching:
    - There was a recent thread that was titled something like "Has anyone's transmission actually blown up?" -- it seems to have been deleted, but the consensus was no.
    - I haven't seen a failure of the engine other than "OMG IT DOESN'T HAVE POWER." It's fine. It accelerates like a truck, not a race car.
    - A few people have blown up rear diffs, some had the "whine" that people are vocal about, some haven't. I'm guessing there's some sort of an issue or defect in assembly, but it's been covered by Toyota under warranty when it happens.

Read through the forum. There's a lot of complaints from people with unrealistic expectations or from people bitching about absolutely minor things that aren't an issue for a rational driver that doesn't have time to just bitch. Ignore the haters, especially Smitty. Some people have nothing better to do than bitch. Just drive the truck and you'll enjoy it. I love mine.

Loved my truck for the first few thousand miles too...then at 10k they had to replace my rear diff...and problems cascaded from there.
