I guess, depending on your load and rigging. Whatever is secure enough to carry off road is secure enough for your interstate run down. If you find a screaming deal on an end of season unit, or someone looking to sell a used one in model you want, I'd take it.

The good news is there is a also a decent used market down here. Many people try it and find out it's too much effort for them.

If you want the best enjoyment of the vehicle, Hernando County northward, from the coast to coast, and most all of the panhandle has lots of opportunity. (obviously the devolped areas don't count, but there are less of those in the area I mention).

S Fl you have to work a bit harder to find it. Also, if you can develop a relationship with large landowners that can give you permissions to fish their property, or access waterways flowing through their property, from their property, you'll do well.

I have a couple of kayaks, and fish up to a mile or so offshore and around the hundreds of inshore islands in our area. I generally prefer a canoe in fresh water, particularly cypress lakes or 5-10 acre farm ponds like I'm describing. You probably need one of each. ;)

1st is for "breaking you into it",both FJ Cruiser group and Caloosa Jeepers hold open invite events here....
2nd is a quiet beach area near a boat launch and a GREAT Riva' for fishing or relaxing on
3rd shows off quiet creatures and has a kayak rental plan in house that lets you "share" the Riva' with said "friends"

    Welcome to Florida

The quiet will be absolutely wonderful. Lived next to a live "music" bar my whole life. If you can consider drunken 20 year olds singing music..

My dad is super paranoid about space with moving as it is. He keeps asking me if I'm keeping all my recovery gear because it "takes up too much room" Somehow I don't think he would be too happy with me buying a kayak to schlep down there. I will probably find a used one when I get situated.

Hmm I feel like I have seen number 3 before. I think my Uncle showed me it when I was planning on going down there for last winter.

Last I recalled is the RYC as mentioned. Not much sadly in that area. I left Englewood in 2006. Pretty much all we did was woods parties out near salt flats. Fairly certain that still happens, area hasn't changed much. There are areas to go wandering, but you may end up on some private property, and someone not being so happy you are there. I remember hearing of a couple members on here in that area. Just can't recall as to whom.

But you do have access to Boca Grande for some fishing. Amongst the many other spots around there too.

Upon further planning I will not be able to pack the sunscreen. It does indeed take up too much room. Sacrifices must be made to get all of my fishing/offroading gear down there

I'll still have some family up here and I might be doing that. I mean every other local on the island does it. Either with Florida or Puerto Rico.

Sorry for the thread bump guys, but I just have a few questions. Maybe you can answer them. So our rental is in Englewood starting on the 1st of January.
1-Where do I have to go to get any sort of beach/offroading permits. I know you guys said there isn't much around, but I am sure they require permits to drive on the beach?
2-Where must I go to find out about hunting permits. Mostly where to find out if my New York one transfers down there. More specifically my bow license. (If someone wants to give me spots/locations I can set up as well, I will be happy to share any game taken in the location.)
3-As far as lights on the vehicle go, is Florida a state that limits how many you can have on at one time? I'm not planning on being the asshole with every single light on the truck driving down the road, but I would like to know. Also, do my auxiliary lights have to have a black cover on them when not in use?
4- I don't have mud flaps. I know some states require and some don't. Do I need to put mine back on?
5- Food. I like food. My dad likes food. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

#1 I don't know of any beaches you can drive on in Florida besides Daytona.
#2 FWC site will help you with permits. I don't believe you can transfer anything from NY to FL.
#3 You can run most lights down here once your off the highway. Just don't be that guy blinding everyone and you should be fine.
    #4 Mud flap free state.
#5 Plenty of places in Port Charlotte and Venice.

Thank you! I guess I will have to do some more research for #2. I know some states accept it. Really don't want to sit through those courses again

FYI #1 there are plenty of beachs that allow you to drive on in FL. You just have to know where they are and I am not too familiar with that area of the state. I know in Jacksonville, FL alone we have a couple of spots and you just pay as you access the beach (just to name a few):
    -Huguenot beach/park
    -Villano Beach
    -St Augustine Beach

I am from the Panhandle in FL (Mexico Beach, FL) and I have a beach driving permit for Gulf county so I know you can drive there and it is near Cape San Blas.

@trdagule is in Naples, FL a little south of Englewood, FL maybe he can chime in if he knows of any places to drive on the beach over/down there.

Thanks @slcsez2000! I wound up calling an office down there in Lakeland, and she didn't really understand what I was asking her. She said just to come down with everything I had from NY and they would sort it out then. I will ask them about the beaches too.

    Welcome to a mini paradise.
    1. No permits, as others have said, not many beaches let you drive on them.
    2. Check out Myfwc.com. I would call Tallahassee and see if your hunter safety course transfers- I would imagin it does. Pm me about a spot...
    3. No more then 2 lights on plus headlights. You can have more on your car/truck,, just not turned on the readway. There is no req for covers on them yet. That does not mean you can run two light bars and think your good. ;)
    4. In my 10yrs of LEO, I have never heard of anyone being written for this, but it is on the books as an equipment violation.
    5. PM me when you get into town. I'm in Sarasota, but head down to Englewood everynow and then.

What SW Florida lacks in offroading, it makes up for with its beaches. While it's fun to creep down a trail, it's equally fun to dig your toes into the sand while sipping a mai tai- in December...
