It sheared in the axle tube on the passenger side.

I'm about 500 miles from home. Can I take the passenger side diff tube off and hit it out? I searched for that option but no one has any write up on taking diff tubes off or anything, and I don't know what to expect when taking it off.

Am I able to take the driver side axle out and hit it from that side?

    What are my options?

If you're far from home, I would try to yank the cv shaft out of the hub side of the cv, and keep the cv inside the hub bolted down like it would normally be. Did this with mine and you can drive around 2wd as long as you want

I threw the axle back on for now but going to try taking the broken piece out again. But I will do that if I can't get it out.

I can't help you with the fix, but if your in a jam, Uhaul may be the answer to get it home.

You can rent a pick up & trailer and get it home to deal with it.

Hopefully other members will chime in and help you get it going where it is.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

You can't get to it from the driver's side because the ADD shaft is solid.

You'll need to pull the diff tube off to knock it out.

Looks like the shaft end broke off? Something similar happened to @Wulf but yours looks like a clean break.

Some etorx sockets to get that diff tube out; Harbor Freight sells them in the impact variety.

You near the Fresno area? I can help get it apart if you're nearby.

Anything I should expect when taking the diff tube out? Straightforward?

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in Utah :)

Penetrating liquid, heat, and maybe a couple of wacks to break the bolts up before attempting to remove it.

I've pulled the diff tube off before, but never with an axle in it (or axle shaft). But I don't expect it to be any different.

Once you get it out, I'd expect using a round pipe/tube to tape out the shaft end and get it to fall out the direction it goes in.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
    @Nano909
If you’re ADD then you better leave the outer hub in the wheel. If you yank it out then your wheel bearing will come loose and the wheel will fall off.

If you are manual hubs then you are fine removing it and drive on.

Just pull the diff tube and use a punch or an extension and drive the broken piece of shaft out from the other side of the diff tube after removing the stub shaft. You would need to mount it in a vise to hold it probably.

I broke the pass side in the same way. I twisted the splines enough that I had to weld a J shaped rod to the remaining stub and hammer it outwards like a slidehammer.

I just put the entire axle back in, it's not rubbing anything internally so I'll get it squared away in the morning.
