It's been about a month and a half since I've washed Sandy, (shh, socal water drought) and I noticed over the past few weeks that it looks like there's a lot of soot or similar building up on the bed, above the exhaust tip. Curious if anyone else has come across this? I also can't seem to manage an average mpg higher than 14ish mixed, and I don't have a very heavy foot. I know my 255/85's are robbing me, but I was barely able to maintain 15mpg mixed before the tires. She's got about 2500 miles on the clock right now. 20170630_091856.jpg

A few folks have stated that their maf is gunked up causing it to burn super rich. Maybe this is related?

Seems like a lot of carbon for that knew of a truck. I would get on it and try to blow it out.

I noticed some soot on mine sometime between 3-10k or there abouts.
The mpg were great ( i posted them) it ran good so i attribute it to Atkinson cycle or something i may not have understood but I never though it should be normal and it did get my attention. I did wash it away and it returned later.
I changed my cps around 11k, forgot about it but did noticed that it hadn't returned to this day.
IDK if that had anything to do with it but you mpg should be better imo even with those size tires or at least on the freeway it should.
I would ck and see if you're on the cps recall list

    Good luck
    Cheers!

Inside the pipe is a little dirtier than a truck of this age and miles should be.
I'd hope that there's no gunk on the MAF after this few miles, but maybe I'll check it out, hit it with some cleaner.
It may sit for 5-10 minutes here or there. I have a 9 month old, so my wife stays in the car at times with the ac running when hitting the grocery store at times. But I've had plenty of vehicles that have idled for significantly longer more frequently, and never experienced this without some kind of rich condition or burning something.

Thanks for the info, I recently ran my VIN, and to my surprise Sandy isn't part of any of the recalls.

Thanks for all the info folks. I'll probably stop by the stealership some time during the week to see if they can come up with anything.

I know I've noticed a break dust issue with my SR5 but I've never had any issues with exhaust thus far. I have stock 245/75s for now and I'm at 3k miles. I avg 17-22 depending on where I'm driving.

Looks like you are running rich. I would take it to the dealer and see what they think. My quick sand has 2k miles on it and doesnt look anything like that.

It's probably just rubber and brake dust. Your exhaust puts out moisture and it's landing on the paint above the pope.

Odd, I don't get that on mine at all (granted my truck is MGM so maybe I just haven't looked hard enough but I think I would notice it). I also live in socal and go a while without washing.

I'd still think it was odd if that much brake dust was coming off of the rear drums after that short of time. Especially since drums are enclosed and hardly handle any of the normal braking to begin with.

That is road grit and mostly tire dust... I have a white truck in LA, same... same...
Every car gets it. Before I put mud flaps on, it was just like yours, but less now with them on.
Very likely aerodynamics around the flap affecting it.

Yep, take the extension off and see if it's still there.

I don't have that problem with my stock tip.

I DO see it on a white car I own and it also has a polished stainless steel tip at the rear of the car.

As for the road grit theory, I have that on my white car and it's on both sides behind the wheels. I assume this is only evident on the OP's truck on the exhaust side.

Could be exactly this. Its still cold here in Alaska and you can see the exhaust moisture hitting that spot.

Yup, the condensation sticking to the body early after startup and combination of driving off allowing the road grime or dust to stick.

Since he's from Socal also, tire dust particulates are a large part of the Air pollution here if he is in a large metro area.
