Maybe this is a strange question, but does anyone know or have had experience with sound deadening mats applied to paneling causing rust issues?

    Where is the rust?
How long has the sound-deadening stuff been on? Who applied it?
Have you had your third brake light assembly Campaign done?
Do you have or had a factory or aftermarket roof rack?
    Do you have a sunroof?

It can rust if it you are sloppy with the application. Properly applied and directions followed, no, it doesn't rust.

Its basically the same adhesion and coverage as paint, therefore don't skimp on the prep work.

I'm asking if anyone has experience with rust caused by sound deadening mats.

That's what I'm thinking, but the prep and proper application for some of the places you see often used seems very difficult or impossible to do. So I'm wondering if anyone has experience with rust caused by the mats on their vehicle.

The most likely and equally the most difficult areas for your question would be the rocker panels on your doors. Its too early to tell whether I have rust there, but I'm still confident that I won't. It was easy to thoroughly clean and dry the area, cut the mat down to manageable pieces, and get the roller in there to press out air bubbles. Its very doable. If you are considering it, dedicate more time than you think you'll need and be both patient and meticulous. It actually isnt difficult at all, its just a little more time consuming than a blind peel and stick.

There is really only one way sound mat can cause rust, and its not the sound mat thats causing it.

But when installed, people will cut it to fit with a blade, if its cut while its laying on the surface then the blade can and will cut the paint to bare metal. Over time this will rust. So when installing mat, you want to do all cutting outside of the car, then put the mat in.

Thanks for the info. Seems like there good be a solid benefit just don't want a long term issue.

    Appreciate your info.

No known rust. Large percentage of interior is covered. Doors, back wall, most of floor and overhead is deadened. Truck is 9 YO, sound deadening 7-8 YO.

I really haven't heard of anybody having long term issues with it. And the benefits are huge. I think the mats do every bit as much towards improving sound as speakers do, if not more so.
