Hi there, I am currently doing the sound deadening on my 09 Taco and have come to the part of the job where I am starting to clean up the residual sound deadening that is left on the floor board of my truck and was wondering if there is a good product out there that would eat away at what is left. Currently I am using Goo Gone and it is slowly breaking down the leftovers but it leaves a brown/black liquid once it eats away at the tar stuff, and once wiped up basically stains the paint (this isnt my main concern just because the carpet will cover it)

dry ice is an option some people use, they use a hammer to gently break it off after leaving the dry ice on there for a bit

I have done the dry ice this past weekend, and all that is left is little peices that are stuck there that I cant really hammer or chisel away at. I did the sound deadening in doors of a C5 vette the previous weekend and I guess the stuff GM used back then was more easily ridden of with Goo Gone.

ah dang, i thought for sure the dry ice would be good for the final break-up of the leftovers

If I cant get all of the residuals up by this weekend I am going to get pellet dry ice and spread it all over the floor and see how much easier it will be to get it all then, if not then I will have to do it manually.

Genuine curiosity, why are you removing factory deadening?

Just deadened and close celled my doors and floor, and about to do the headliner

In hindsight I should have just put the sound deadening over the pre existing stuff, however the reason I am removing it was originally because my clutch pedal started leaking, and apparently this leak had been happening for a while before I got the truck, because when I removed the pedal it spilled hydraulic fluid all over my driver footwell and ruined the carpet, so this started me down a spiral of things. After spilling the fluid I went out and bought new carpet, and while installing the carpet I noticed that the fluid had essintially rubbed away the sound deadening tar that was already in the footwell, and honestly should have only cleaned out the footwell, but I was feeling over confident about my patience and ability and so naturally I decided to completely remove it all and put in some kilmat, when in reality I only needed to kilmat the footwell and if I wanted to put kilmat over the factory deadening. Now I am driving around in my truck with a gutted interior except for the driver seat, and regretting my decisions right now. However, this weekend I should have the interior back in with sound deadening again. If you are thinking of removing it to put in new stuff, see if it will stick to the pre existing stuff.

also, how well does the close celled foam work on the floor, doors, and headliner?

A combination of closed cell foam with a layer of mass loaded vinyl over it will do more for for the floor than stick on deadener. Deadener is mainly for panel vibrations while the foam/vinyl combination is better at reducing air born noises like road and tire noise. Both should be used on the doors since the speakers are mounted in them and they let road noise in. For the roof I usually go with CLD tiles. Basically sound deadener with a 10-15 mil thick aluminum backer to add a lot of mass over a small area. It takes a lot more time and money but does produce better noise reduction results.

Not my Tacoma but here's the deadening I did in my other car.

    CLD tiles on the roof

Closed cell foam on the passenger side with the mass loaded vinyl over it on the driver's side. Eventually covered everything.

Sound deadening on the doors, both inner and outer skin.

And finally a layer of mass loaded vinyl over all of it.

I was also riding around with only a drivers seat for about 2 weeks
I didnt do any testing in between sound deadening and close cell foam so i cant verify a difference there

Does anyone have a link to good MLV for purchase?

prior: road noise @60mph highway to work 70dB (iphone app)
after: same highway @60mph 66-67dB (iphone app)

I got mine from Second Skin. Was about the same pricing as on Ebay at the time. This was years ago so you'll probably want to look around.

Oh, and it makes putting the carpet and everything else back in a royal pain in the ass due too how much it bulks the floor up.
