Today's engines and emissions systems are quite well engineered and are not the power-robbing clusterfucks that we dealt with in the 70s.

There is virtually no power to be gained by removing any modern emissions component. Even removing the cat provides only marginal improvement.

Yes... it's 2013. It's not 1975 when your engine was running 7.5:1 compression and you barely got 200hp (crank) out of a 400 cubic inch engine.

Hi I have a 2014 doing the same thing. Talked to the local experts and they say working as designed btw. they say poor design and we need to lodge/regester our complaints/concerns by calling 800 331 4331. Toyota corp does not think there's a problem. If we don't call they will continue to crank out this version. Our hope is that they can retro better version that does not make noise and have it available or issue a recall. Call now!

You were fed a complete line of bullshit.

There will NEVER be a recall for this. Recalls are issued for safety related items that may lead to an accident, or severe engine/driveline failure.

ALL 2nd Gen Tacomas do this. It's nothing new with the 2014. Some do it after shutdown, some after startup, but this pump is in every 2nd Gen Tacoma and there is nothing Toyota can or will do about it.
Bug the piss out of them, and best case they might issue a TSB to pack a pillow around the pump to deaden the noise.

I think the melting DRL turn signal lens issue is a bit more important than a minor noise that doesn't bother most owners.

It's normal. Mine is a 2013 and I have done research on the web on this. They all do it. It doesn't draw attention from others though. If yours is that loud I would take it in.

Thanks everyone for the comments and info. I just bought a 2013 Tacoma Limited w/ 23k on it, and I didn't notice this noise after my 2 test drives. After 2 days at home with the truck, I was starting to get worried that I had a problem. Now I can just enjoy my truck.

Growing up here in Michigan, I don't know what a smog pump is, but my 2015 makes this same noise.

Can someone enlighten me as to what it is, and why I need it here in Michigan?

My 2015 Tacoma V6 makes the same noise. I'm glad someone posted the video clip of the engine with the noise. Plus, I'm glad that so many of us have mentioned the noise, as well as the dealer response that the noise is normal. Kinda unusual noise, but if it is normal and intended, then I guess it's OK by me.

And for those of you asking, the lefties in California, since there are so many of them (~10% of the national population), get to have their way with auto emission control laws. The feds rules (or any other state, for that matter) are less stringent than those of CA, so the auto makers are safe in following the CA laws for national distribution of vehicles. So, whether you are in Michigan, Nebraska, or Texas like me, you have CA emission control on your car or truck.

Perhaps, in the future, Toyota will be able to quiet the component that makes the noise. Until then, happy motoring, you all!

I contacted Toyota and guess what? I was the only person to file a concern. Please call the customer service number 800 331 4331 and get a case number. I did send them an email first and they actually called me back....
