Hey all, was driving today and started to hear this weird sound coming from my driver side wheel. Sounds like i'm continuously driving on snow, or ice is stuck somewhere and its clanging around. Cant hear it on the highway, mainly when driving 50km/hr and under or when turning. I jacked her up and there is no play in the wheel, took of the wheel and no ice is trapped. (sorry for my ignorance of parts here) I noticed the hub is attached to an 'arm' which attaches to the front differential. I was curious if that could be making the noise? Also, what is the proper name for that 'arm' piece? Wondering how difficult it would be to change myself. Many thanks in advance!

Try checking the sway bar endlinks. My drivers side crapped out on me, and sounded like what you’re describing. Question for you, is the sound suddenly louder going over bumps?
To answer your other question, that is the lower control arm. There’s a few things attached to it that would make it a labour intensive job, and you’d need an alignment after. Endlink is an easy place to start.

Yes, I have noticed on some bumps a louder than normal noise. I will check that out, thank you!

Does the noise get louder when turn one direction vs the other.
Say, louder turning right and quite turning left? Or vice versa?

I would say it is equally as loud turning in both directions, but I'm going to take it for a drive today and pay more attention. I remember turning slight right, into a gas station yesterday and heard a loud noise as I hit a bump going into the gas station.

I'm not comfortable doing the change myself, do you all suggest I got to toyota to get the repair done? Lol, plus its like -30 out and I dont have a warm shop to work in

Kinda looks like a no choice situation. Twistin’ on wrenches @ -30 better be for Big money.

Negative, No, Notta - on taking it to the dealer.
They quoted me like $600 to change the front wheel bearings. That was EACH.
While I do think the dealerships do good work, I can’t recommend paying their price.
I did them myself for about $150.

Last time I was in for an alignment.
I asked the local shop here in town, what they charged. (Out of curiosity)
    They were just over $400.

I would say, you could probably have the bearings done in 1.5 hrs per side.
Some guys even after if they have a lift, and everything comes out easy.
Definitely check around and compare prices.

Okay cool, I know a shop quite close to me, and I'd rather take it there. Just want to keep the integrity of the taco, she's been reliable this far, almost 200,000k with nothing wrong with her. I'll post an update on what happens. Thank you!

When its that cold, stuff can make weird noises that goes away when it warms back up. Something may just be frozen stiff and making a noise that will go away when it thaws.

Did one in my 2011 at 81K the other side is still rolling along 60K latter. It really is not a bad job but be sure to buy the assembly hub bearing etc. Did mine the hard way by just replacing the bearing.

It's not a bearing. Not the same noise as that, plus, when I jacked up the truck, there was no play on the wheel and it rotated fairly easily. I've diagnosed it to be either sway bar end links or the cv joint is going. It's more of a crunching sound when driving
