@scottalot I hope that dental insurance kicks in right away for you all. Normally, dental has a 1 year waiting period before covering anything other than routine cleanings, X-rays, etc.

Smokers...what are the necessities, luxuries, don't needs, etc.? I'm planning on getting one but don't want to get reeled in with all the fancy extras like Bluetooth but I also want to get the options that'll give me the most for my money.

Never owned one but saw they range from $40-$500.

Seems a little sketch. I'll never buy from a friend or have a friend as my mechanic (if didn't know how to work on my own).

The little Weber one does its job. I've got a "Weber mini smokey Joe diy" smoker. It makes smoke and cooks food!

I have a Masterbuilt 40" Electric smoker and I love it. Mind you, I'm not hardcore "gotta smoke every weekend", but it does what I need it to. I like it cause you can set it up, put it at the right temperature, and forget it. Plus it has plenty of room if I want to do like a turkey for Thanksgiving or a couple butts for a get together.

I would suggest getting a good remote thermometer like a Maverick (https://www.amazon.com/Maverick-Red...-5&keywords=maverick+wireless+bbq+thermometer). You can get a dual probe wireless setup that monitors both the smoker and the meat temps for around $60. Most new smokers have a built in meat probe, but I've found they're rather unreliable and inconsistent.

My dad used one of these for years and it treated him pretty damn well. another buddy uses a green egg and says its the cats pajamas. that's the spectrum iive seen and I really really couldn't tell the difference in taste. the egg held heat better naturally, but the char griller didn't exactly need a lot of attention to keep the temp right either. my vote goes for the char griller, but that's because I could never afford the green egg lol

That's kind of the spectrum I've seen too. I think the biggest thing for me would be not having to babysit it. I like the idea of "set it and forget it" so I can do other things around the house while its cooking; however, if I have to babysit a $500 smoker the same way (or close to the same) I would a $40 one...I'll elect to spend the $40.

Thats why I like the electric smoker. Only drawback is they don't get incredibly hot. Hottest mine goes to is 275, which makes it a little difficult to crisp the skin on chicken. But doing anything low and slow you should be good. The woodchip tray is right above the heating element, and IMO it puts out a decent amount of smoke, though there are products like the Amazn pellet tray that will supplement your smoke.

Keep an eye at Academy sports.. they run pretty good deals on them from time to time.
