Anybody watching Travis Pastrana do the Evel Knievel Cesar’s Palace jump on History Channel?

They’re showing a lot of cool old Evel Knievel footage in the buildup.

No but it sounds interesting. I have seen a bunch of commercials for it. I just don't think anyone can be what Evel was. I mean if Pastrana does the same stunts Evel did with the types of bikes he did it with then that's saying something. Evel did a lot of his stuff without all the modern technologies of today both in bikes and computer software to make all the engineering calculations.

He’s using a 350 lb. flat track Indian bike with 4” of uptravel instead of the 12” on his dirtbikes. I’m not a motorcycle guy but they claim it’s close.

Ok well good for him then! I'm not trying to take anything away from Pastrana but there are just some things that those old guys did that the new generation just can't compete with. I remember an old TV show about movie car stunts and there was this one French guy that set up and either did them himself or trained the stunt drivers of the day to do them. That man is a legend in my book. I don't think to many wheel men these days could pull off what he did with what he had to work with compared to what they have today. Still there is a ton of skill involved just a different breed of folks.

Oh no doubt, the resources he’s got for this compared to what Knievel had...I’m sure it’s not even close.

Agreed. Knievel will always be the legend.

But credit to where credit is due, Pastrana has been the king of extreme sports, especially dirt bikes, for 10+ years. The man jumped out of a plane without a parachute too (obviously had his team to help hold catch him and lower him but still, that takes balls).

I wasn't around to watch Knievel so I just feel lucky to have followed Pastrana for so long.

Growing up as a kid in the 80s Evel was a huge deal I remember having some of his action figures and what not. Hell the man made a 140ft jump a few yrs before his death. I will give credit to Pastrana for actually recreating the jump and not just using the best today has to offer and that he still has more balls than 99.9% of the people out there.

It is actually a calculation based on the amount of power/energy it takes to get weight/mass moving. It's some enginerding stuff. Also if the tires are taller than stock that weight is moved more outward from where the power is transferred thus putting more "strain" to get it up and moving. An easy way to show an example is take a weight put it at the end of lets say a 1ft long pole and try and get it swinging around then lengthen that pole some and do the same. There is a calculation for all this I just don't feel like digging it up. The 1lb=50 is just an avg. Like drag racers will tell you that on a stock vehicle every 100lbs you take out of a car you can gain a tenth well that's true up to a certain point then you have deminishing returns.
