I've seen the instructions they provide the same ones for the 2nd gen. Unless they consider stock 3.73s extremely low. Ain't no way to do it without taking the ring gear off.

 

I would venture to guess you won't have to remove the rg if they are 3.73s.
Just my thought.

You haven't seen this thread have you. Toyota did some redesigning of the 8.4 in the 2nd gen beefing up the carrier and such which is probably where the difference is.

Right. But I also remember countless threads on teeth and ring gears cracking while hard wheeling the 2nd gens.

9 years in the Air Force as a mechanic will do that. They MAKE you read them and follow step by step and if QA comes by and you don't have your 3" thick manual open its a write up. Checking the oil? Better have that damned book open.

First thing I usually do is unpack whatever it is I am working on and then pull out the directions. Hard to break old habits.

 

I go to a strange town one time and that is usually the ONLY time I need maps and such. Drives my friends bonkers how I can do that.

There are a lot of factors that go into that issue. Most that are stripping gears are the e-lockers which don't have the support the opens do. It is a problem though I agree. Toyota just put in the bare min. rear IMO for this truck to just get by for street driving. The 3rd gen e-locker and MT trucks come with 8.8" rear diffs.

 

I haven't looked into this but is that possibly on the TRD OR models? I think they have an 8" rear end with the locker, all others have the 8.4".

Wife and I are already talking about when/how to go back for a visit.

 

I don't remember off hand. But I know 2 people that cracked the entire ring wheeling and a few more stranded at URE with broken teeth.
A bunch of people were have the ring and pinion sent off to ECGS for cryo treatment.
Havnt heard of the issue on the late 2nd gens or 3rd gens.
