We have not done one in several years, but KJ's had crab legs on sale, so I bought way too many.

I've been sick, so did not really get to enjoy it so much, but my kids went to town, so completely worth it.

 

I've seen Harbor Freight winches work harder than people with Warn winches, but as a rule I'd size up

 

I have the smittybilt X20 gen3 and have been very happy with it. Also heard nothing but good things about the badlands harbor freight winches. Personally, I don't see the need to drop the cash on a warn especially if you're only going to use it every now and then.

 

Warn is chump change compared to ComeUp winches

 

Are they waterproof that you know of? I know I'm looking at waterproof just cause I like the extra security blanket

Definitely this, I bought a Warn M8000s thinking I should get x1.5 GVRW for winch capacity but I based it off empty weight. Once you start adding in camping stuff the weight adds up so now its closer to parity when fully loaded. I should have gone for a 10k winch. Definitely go for the synthetic line, its lighter weight and less dangerous (still dangerous though) than a steel cable but I like the lighter weight. Even if it's buried in your bumper, find a winch cover for it to get more life out of your synthetic.

@JimboAnz waterproof just held water in mine ain't waterproof and I've been through a couple little runoff ditches @ahspurlock

8k is plenty for our trucks, never had an issue on the ant hills I've seen

yep replacing the solenoids on my winch do to water issues but I'm running a 12k winch on the runner lol

 

That thing has seen some years of use an abuse.
