I'm wondering how that guy got up there without tearing off his rear bumper. Maybe I'm not taking the right lines lol

After 15 years in the tire industry, I don't trust them at all. Toyo's are already here, and I'll put them on Saturday morning.

Fair enough, you know better than I would that’s for sure. Out of curiosity, were failures due to plugs common or happen to come through every once in a while. I’ve got three in our current set of tires on our cars.

It's more common than you think. You're essentially betting that the plug holds up against both the pressure of the tire as well as the road conditions. When you put a plug into the tread of a tire, you're ripping the belts apart to jam in what amounts to a resin coated cloth from the outside with nothing to hold or anchor it to. Where there's no internal belts (ie. shoulder, sidewall, etc.), you're just hoping that it doesn't fly out driving or when you hit a pothole, road conditions, etc. It always blew my mind the people that tow extensively to plug the tire that you're pushing it's capacity. Plugging a tire wasn't as big of an issue in the days of bias ply tires (1 singular belt inside). Radial tires have multiple layers of steel and nylon belts to provide a better ride and longevity, so you're really causing much larger issues long term. Yes, there's plenty of people that will say that they've never had an issue in ___ years with plugs. There's a reason the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) recommends only the patch and stem style repairs from the inside of the tire. It's also the only repair that doesn't void any manufacturers' warranty.

I think you are doing it wrong  Made it all the way up there with my baby 265/75-16 tires. It was a running joke with my wife if I ripped the bumper off I could get a high mount. The stock bumper withstood everything I threw at it. :annoyed:

Good info, thanks. Can it be retroactively patched after being plugged?

I'm sure there's plenty of places/sites out there that say it's not a problem, but I personally wouldn't recommend. As time goes on, the resin or rubber used to coat the piece of leather dries out and starts to crack and absorb water. If it's a situation to get you off the side of the road and straight to the tire shop/mechanic, I don't see an issue with patching it in that instance provided that the hole meets patch repair criteria.

My stock is pretty banged up. My wife tells me I should buy a real bumper for the rear but I kind of want to see how bad I can mess this one up first. I think the short wheel base of my truck has helped with the life of it and my drive shift. The shaft is looking pretty bad too though. Lots of deep cuts in it.

I put 8 plugs in a sidewall, kept wheeling all weekend, and drove 8hrs home... Don't do what I do. I had other trucks with me, did this so I still had my spare if I needed it, and immediately got it replaced at home since local to the offroad park wasn't going to have one until middle of the week.
