Lots of great wheeling around hill city to get to the alpine! Just make sure you are on legal trails with the proper permit if you plan on exploring!

I actually purchased my rig in Dickinson! It was probably the only Tacoma in town before I drove in back to SD.

I'm thinking of getting out to the Black Hills again in the next few weeks, what's open for trails? Is it worth coming in the winter? I know main roads are open but that's nothing I haven't seen already.

Bring a snowmobile with you and it's worth it! (Well maybe not this year since there hasn't been that much snow).

supposed to be pretty warm tomorrow so it might melt a little bit. I know in town the snow isn't that bad but there is normally more snow that sticks around for a while in the hills. I normally used to go out near nemo and it rarely seemed too bad.

Hey, SD gentlemen. Just revisiting this, as I'm getting closer to making it happen. As of now I'm shooting for April 23rd - 26th. A short trip.

I did make a post on Black Hills 4 Wheelers for some advice. One thing they told me is that Camp 5 is closed until mid-May. Which is fine, I certainly don't need to do Camp 5. But will a lot of the other trails be closed too?

One of the areas I'm seriously considering is here:
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5341611.pdf

It's pretty close to Rapid City, so won't require a lot of extra driving, and seems to have a ton of trails in the area. Has anybody gone to this area before? Advice?

I know most of the campgrounds will be closed during this time, but I plan on dispersed camping anyways.

Also looking at spending a night in the Badlands at Sage Creek - or maybe dispersed on the grassland somewhere. This guys post was pretty inspirational:
    http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...ds-Nat-l-Park-amp-Buffalo-Gap-Nat-l-Grassland

Given it will be spring, I will be cautious of rainstorms and 'gumbo'.

And, of course, in anyone in the area wants to meet up for some wheeling or camping during that time, let me know.

Which area on that map were you wondering about? The yellow dots will be closed at that time, that is the area between log porch and Schroeder road

Looking forward to this trip. The more research I do, the more cool areas I'm finding in Buffalo Gap that I want to check out, so I think the Badlands area can easily fill a couple days of exploring. I'll probably only hop into the Hills for a day - at the area I indicated. I'd like to plan a future trip though for when all the trails are open.
