WTF another name I have never heard them called that. We always called them specs, speckled trout, vampire fish (fun name as kids), mom called them yellow mouths, but I have caught a ton of them wonder where the name weakfish originated from. The pics on google only a couple actually look like sea trout to me. The others look a little different

There are a lot of local/regional names for fish that are different than other areas. I wonder if that is the case with this.

In my experience folks in the North call them weakfish. It took me a few days of fishing in the north to realize that they were talking about specs.

Different subspecies I think it looks like there are some subtle differences like the spotting, teeth, body build, yellow mouth etc. Going to have to do some more research. Both these are google search pics

You learn something new everyday but yeah the true weakfish I guess you could say I don't think I have caught before unless it was a bycatch but the weakfish nickname for speckled seatrout I have caught. Damnit it my simple mind I have confused myself!

Yeah that's the true weakfish spots and coloration are slightly different than the specks which also has the nickname weakfish.

They darn sure do have a "weak" jaw too. I couldn't tell you how many have evaded my landing trying to scoop them with a net, especially the larger ones.

Yeah the specks kinda do as well. I call crappie paper mouths and they guy I go crappie fishing with calls them silkies because of their weak mouths.

Never been but google maps shows me they’re both OBX but Cape Lookout is more south.

@ovrlndkull could probably answer this one better...

Portsmith is a small island N. of cape lookout. Technically cape lookout is kinda the end of the southern outerbanks or not technically outerbanks and the beginning of the outer Banks which are the islands that protect the pamlico sound. The island just s west of cape lookout shackleford banks hahas a ferry that goes out to it and primitive camping. It's a cool place because wild ponies live on it and there is decent camping there as well. There are cabins and such on cape lookout called portsmith village and camping there as well which can be some of the confusion.

I think the ferry I was looking into leaves out of Davis NC. Which island has the best fishing / primitive camping? Is the shaclekford ferry passenger only or can it carry vehicles?

I have my sons biennial NICU reunion in Charleston on April 14th but I’d be able to fish on the 15th.

Are you planning on making the trip all the way down to my area or stopping a bit shorter (OBX or Myrtle Beach area) since it’s a shorter 4-day trip for you?

    Couple studs right there ladies...

Me too! If you’re coming down April 13th, I’m only busy on the 14th during the day. I’m totally free March 30 - April 2 and April 27-30...

The fishing forecasts down here look outstanding pretty much every weekend from beginning of March to end of April. In May it looks to shift out of the weekend and into the week days.

Here’s the local fishing forecasts for those days...I’m sure could/would change but look good right now.
