Tentative weekend trip planned to Hatteras #2:

Heading down Friday April 13th at some point (maybe after work, maybe a little earlier if I can sneak out). Coming back Sunday April 15th. Unless I can talk my way into Monday off too.

Me and a few buddies will be staying at the Cape Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Tentative annual week-ish long trip to Hatteras:

Friday October 19th - Friday October 28th. I've never fished a tournament, I've never caught a drum. So this year, I'm hoping to do both.

This will be a surf fishing tournament. You will need 4WD and a permit to get out on the beach. I'll have at least one or two people with me with trucks, so we'll have some seats open.

    Screenshot_20180307-204238.jpg

Again, staying at the Cape Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe, although that may change. Either way, if you come, get ready for long days and nights during the tournament, and a lot of driving to chase these things up and down the island.

No ideas on the cost, rules and regulations, or format of the tournament, working on finding all that out.

Beach buggy association I wonder if this is going to be a surf fishing tourney? They get big out there. Usually in drum tourneys they have to be withing the slot which is nothing over 27in or under 14" but if it is going to be surf I wonder if they are going to be weighing the big boys then releasing. Interesting more research is needed for this.

Yes, it's a surf fishing tourney. I'm going to go check put past tournament info to figure some things out when I get a free moment to sit down and relax. Just wanted to get that stuff posted up while it was on my mind .

ANNOUNCING 10TH ANNUAL RED DRUM TOURNAMENT

    (SEE BELOW FOR REGISTRATION LINKS)

    By Bill King, Director #1467

To our Members and Red Drum Anglers,

As one of the Co-Chairman for this year’s RDT, please allow me to share how excited I, the RDT Steering Committee and the entire Board of Directors is about the 10-year anniversary of our Red Drum Tournament. Much planning and thought has gone into making our tournament the very best fishing experience for you.

As last year’s tournament banquet was ending, and with Dave Joyner’s announcement to our President Bill Smith of his stepping away and retiring as the Director of this long running event, the Board was faced with quite a challenge. Dave had shared his basic “action plan” with the Board and told us we would be fine using his outline. How right he was.

President Bill Smith appointed a Red Drum Steering Committee consisting of seven folks with the concurrence of the BOD. We began meeting and working throughout the winter to build onto what Dave had put together - with a few “new” improvements and upgrades. We appreciate those who offered ideas and suggestions left in our comments box at last year’s banquet. We hope you see yours incorporated in this year’s event.

What's a good all round setup to fish from drum from the surf? I have 50some fishing poles in the garage mostly bass/catfish/crappie rigs. I never had any luck from the surf in OBX I usually just hit up the bridges.

A good pole that you can chuck a carolina rig like you would for catfish but use a no roll sinker. They'll also go for live bait rigs using pinfish. Reds pretty much hit anything when they get as big as they do out there. How heavy are your catfish setups?

I've pulled in 70 pound blue cats on them but they don't cast for shit. I use them for sharks off that short pier in nags head and have done fairly well. How far out do you need to get? I guess they would cast better if I switched up to some 8pound diameter power pro.

What are their lengths. It all depends on the distance to cast there is usually a calm section where the waves just roll through before they break and where they broke previously that is where they stalk prey and most fish hang out so depending on where that is is where you need to cast it changes all the time tides, daily, sandbar moved etc. An easy one would be like an 8ft medium heavy catfish rod load the spool up with 50-60lb braid then run a flouro leader I usually have my no roll sinker on the braid. Then anywhere from 1-3ft leader and a snelled circle hook or live bait hook but even live baiting I like circle hooks.

East Coast Sports from surf city does some good youtube videos on what to look for as far as the way the water is moving and such for surf fishing to get you some better ideas of what to do. It is really hard to explain over the net without writing a book.

A 40" red will fight harder than a 70lb blue in my experience they also have a lot more stamina. Plus you'll be fighting the undertoe and currents so you can add that to the fight. It's fun as hell though!

You should try skinny water fishing for them with ultrlite gear no more than 6-8lb test catching slot size on topwater. Nothigh like a bottom mouth coming up to smash a topwater. Then using such lite gear. So for me it that is like fighting giant sharks and marlin. Huge fish for such small gear. If it works out sometime I could put you on some good 8-10ft bulls with the possibility of a 10+tiger!

Now I know I don't have the gear for those. I about broke my pole bringing in those 5 footers off the pier. I forgot what wind it was but when you felt that water temp come up overnight you could bet the sharks were biting. If the water was cold all I caught where skates.

I caught plenty of puppies and trout on lite gear by the power plant. They call it hot ditch I think on the Elizabeth river in VA. Never have got one on top water that does sound fun.....

It's hilarious the essentially belly flop them. I have fouled hooked more that way than actually getting them in the mouth they aren't the best aim in the world.

I'm an absolute PENN whore. I'm not too man to admit it.

My spinning combo is a Penn Fierce II combo. 10' rod, moderate fast action, and a Fierce II 8000 reel spooled with 30# mono. Use this for smaller stuff, croaker, spot, mullet.

My drum rod is a 12' Penn Prevail, heavy fast action, and a Penn Squall 15 non-level wind casting reel spooled with 17# mono, and a 60# mono shock leader.

This is still a little up in the air, but you can add it to the OP if you want.

    This is 100% happening.

Just put in for the time off, as did one of my friends. Registering this weekend for it.

Like, set in stone, I'll quit my job if I have to.

So yeah, go ahead and throw it on the OP, @dan0mite. I quoted it all into one post so you can copy/paste easier.
