Dan, I just realized that my fluid recommendation would not have been the best for your application. When I installed my mechanical LSD diff I was instructed by Chris4x4 & someone else on the forum and the Dealership to NOT use synthetic fluid in my diff.

The '05 - '08 mechanical LSD's contain clutch plates which require a certain amount of friction. Therefore, synthetic fluid would hinder the "grabbing" effect of the clutches. That's why I used basic Valvoline gear lube with 4 ozs of friction modifier.

'09 & up are all open diffs. Your Limited Slip is "brake controlled".

The transmission has a breather too?
BTW, I am saving all of this info for my future 4WD purchase :D.

Do it.......... Do it.......... Do it..........

    What Nick said!

Like Ice Cube said in the movie Friday, "peer pressure's a MOTHERF&@%ER"

I'm trying to do what I can...even if I can only come up for Sat and leave Sunday morning.i would do that. I just don't want to have to go up, wheel, and back in one day.

    When is this purchase planned?????

Yeah, I understand. That's a lot of driving for one day.

As for the purchase, no time soon. I have my truck set up exactly how I want it & I plan to enjoy it for at least another year or 2 :notsure: but it doesn't hurt to know what to expect even if it's still that far away.

Anyone down to do some sort of run in January? This will my last month before I bring my family down to FL and It'll be hard convincing my wife to let me drive the distance "just to off road". I have several weekends off during Jan. 4-5, 11-12, 17-18 and 25-26. I'd really like to get out being that I missed the last run. If you're up for it let me know.

    Thanks

Just looked at that thread. I wouldn't mind the almost 8 hr drive but I won't get off of work till 830am on the 4th. Not sure how that trip will work but I'll be a day and 1/2 late on getting there.

    Hello folks,

Yesterday was the first day in a while that I had absolutely NOTHING to do since my wife & I had our Christmas dinner with our family on the 24th & I didn't have to work on the 25th.

Well, I started to read different Tacoma 4X4 threads so I have an idea what to expect when my time comes (no time soon guys, I'm just wierd that way) to buy a 4WD Tacoma. I read up on the yellow wire mod & like that alot. Basically, all 4 wheels get traction ALMOST as good as being locked but better than ALSD.

I would most likely lean towards the SR5. I like the chrome bumper & grill & I'm gonna go with either 5100's @ 1.75 with 3 Leaf AAL or OME 2.5" suspension & most likely the 17" FJ Alloys so why pay extra for the TRD suspension & wheels?

But, when I read this post
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...nt-differential-bearing-vibration-thread.html
I was surprised at how ultra sensitive the 4WD Tacoma's are to even a 2" lift. Some of these guys have gone through more than one diff & when Toyota DOES warranty them they put the same crappy needle bearings in. ECGS supposedly has a fix for this. At least that's promising.

For those of you with 4WD Tacoma's have you had these issues? Dan, was your previous truck 4WD also & was it lifted?

Just asking guys. Want to make sure I do ALL of my homework so I make the right choice.

    :D

First off Tac, while saving your money, buy a good winch and pulley setup.

Next fwiw, I was telling Jeanne tonight that we should get another truck and build it. Probably won't happen, but the idea would be a 2010 or 11 access cab, Tundra rear axle, Toyota V8, boxed frame, rear cage, long travel all 4 corners, all the frame gussetts and stiffeners, fiberglass fenders, pretty much a California style race prerunner desert truck.

I would also add, I want to get rid of the drive by wire throttle if possible.

BTW, I pulled apart your oem diff with plans to get everything clean and assembled for a possible weekend swap. The place I ordered the ring gear bolts from sent the wrong ones. The entire time I had them sitting / waiting, I kept thinking those are kind of long, but trusted the parts guy. So I'll hit the local dealer and see if I can have them Saturday if not in stock.

TruTrac and exhaust are last of my parts on hand. Still undecided on the exhaust. I have brand new DTST headers and a set of used cats to weld up along with a Magnaflow. Just having a hard time getting motivated after seeing those URD equal length long tube headers.

Also Tac, as far as the lift, there are a lot f different posts about how to solve the vibration problems. My direction would be to build a driveshaft with a CV joint and proper length after the lift, plus keep the telscopic portion but get all the parts polished and DLC coated. Then keep it greased with good moly grease.

My 2011 wasn't lifted, but I have heard the same things. Some people say the diff drop is the only way to go, others say not in a million years...then there's the group with no issues that say GO FOR IT. Personally, I drive my beast too much for it to develop vibe issues. Most of the fixes (if you get the vibe issues) that I have seen seem to be custom...

Honestly, this is what holds me back from a lift every time I start getting excited about one. We all know how awesome my local dealer is for service aswell...hate to see what crap they'd pull for a diff replacement...
