@cgs2k2 Thanks for the info. The bad MPG isn't a worry as I work from home now; driving is only for adventures and errands, at least for the time being. Not that my 4Runners got great gas mileage, with one having been lifted on 255/85/16s and some heavy armor, and the other being a 270k-mile V8 4th gen. (In fairness my stock 5th gen did average 20 MPG)

Is the coolant leak issue one that's present across the board, or just on specific years? I remember the VVTi issues some people had with the 4.7s.

Heated and cooled seats sound glorious.

@Roody i'm not an expert on the subject, but i believe the coolant issues are generally seen across the board. look around the web for "coolant valley gx460" which is one issue, the other seems to be the radiators themselves. i have not had a problem yet *knock on wood*

I will sell you our 2015 Premium w/80k for $31k. It’s my wife’s car but she wants something smaller so it’s gotta go.

It’s white with the brown interior. No mods. No rust. Bought it with 23k on it. Came from Florida. We are 2nd owners.

no coolant leak and no timing cover leak.

you don’t need to run premium fuel. It’s the same exact motor as in the Tundra. That’s just some Lexus Premium Brand BS. I put regular in both our 460 and my 470 with zero problems. Toyota doesn’t require premium and the engine is absolutely no different in the Lexus trims ;)

interesting that you have not had problems. it's my understanding that the lexus has a higher compression rate. when i ran non-premium ONE TIME i threw a code.

nope. same engines. I'll try to pull the stock ignition maps on the GX and Tundra tonight and screenshot.

87 octane here, my 470 is VVTi as well.

hm... i can only base it off my actual experience which is that my GX notices the difference.

    digging around online i found:

EDIT i think i disproved some of the "stats" i found - so i deleted them to not misinform anyone.

haven't verified that any of that is true further than a quick good search. also have heard the gx is tuned (valve timing) to be smoother and quieter. again, i'm not an engineer and can't necessarily varify - but i know my gx had trouble with the non-premium gas. literally threw a code and went into a limp mode. no other variables besides the cheaper gas. cleared the code, filled rest of the way with premium, and no issues after.

I’m just stating what I do and haven’t seen a single issue. The ECU is smart enough to pull timing when any knock happens. Even if it’s down 10HP by using regular it’s not noticeable with everyday driving.

if premium works for you then don’t stop running it. Both our vehicles average 26-30k miles a year. The fuel savings is the driving factor is why they get regular versus premium. It’s $0.60-0.80 more per gallon for 93 where I live.

    ^^This.^^

Using regular just "detunes" them causing loss of HP. Not sure if it's 10HP (or more/less), but like Matt said, it isn't noticeable. I run regular once in a blue moon when premium isn't available and haven't experienced any issues.

the ECU is octane learning. So if you went from premium to regular and did a hard pull that could trigger a CEL.

Would anyone be weary of a high-mileage (~220k) 2003 GX470? AHC has been removed, seems like it's up to date on service (timing belt, water pump, fluids etc). Clean Carfax, no rust, Dobinson's lift, 35"s, bunch of armor, snorkel, winch, Prinsu rack, new UCAs/LCAs, etc. Nicely built with good quality parts. Seems like a good truck but I'm weary as my prior high-mileage V8 Toyota (a 2005 4Runner 4.7 Limited) was supposed to be "dead reliable" and caused a bunch of headaches. I really like that this one is already built as it saves me the time/money of doing so myself. I have the option to trade my 2012 Wrangler (2-door with 39k miles, 6-speed, Rubicon axles, 33"s, some armor) straight-up for this 470 and am seriously considering it but have hesitation in going to an older vehicle with a bunch more mileage. Thoughts? If I don't go ahead with this I'll probably keep the Jeep until the spring and get into a GX460 but am not looking forward to spending the time/money to make it off-road capable shortly after purchase.
