Almost 4 million people watching the SpaceX live feed. That's a lot more people than I figured would be interested.

I'm just in awe of the progress. Not only have they built a capable vehicle, they have the ability to add features that would have been unimaginable previously. Those guys look comfy and completely not cramped.

    Compare that to Soyuz

So much progress. Its wonderful to see.

I really dgaf that this private company launched a shuttle. What does that do for me? For society?

I cant pretend to be a part of the imagined community that is affected by this.

You use stuff everyday in your life that you owe the research and invention of to the space program.

    :notsure:

I think it's pretty neat. It's not life changing for me, unless I win the lottery and buy a seat once they start flying tourists. The technological advances are cool to see. It's kind of like watching F1 for me. Doesn't do anything for me, unless they close the roads I use in order to hold the race. Still entertaining and pretty interesting to watch. Plenty of other channels on the TV :)

This is one of those things where its easy to hand wave it into being something inconsequential, especially if you're far enough out to be calling it a shuttle . But if you look into the details of the technology developed over the course of the space program and how that has changed our world, then its pretty clear that its had a profound impact on our lives. This is the next step in the journey, and the thing that is super exciting about it is that it signals the will to go to space and innovate to get there is alive and well in the USA. We aren't outsourcing it to China. We don't have to depend on the Russians to get us up there. We can do it all here.

I'm not hating on space travel. Wanted to see what you guys would say. To me it is sad because nasa has been in the toilet for years and now a private company took up the reins. Kind of shows where we are at these days. I just dont take much joy in this, ive got a friend gushing about the launch at the moment and I just feel like he is vicariously proud

The thing is that NASAs thing is to explore and to figurer out the hard stuff. They've handled earth orbit for 50+ years now, its old hat and they're the wrong organization for the job. Since everything they do is _super_ expensive, and for good reason, handing the day to day mundane launches off to a private company that can take what NASA learned and apply it to a reusable, cheap, launch system, frees up NASA to go back to doing hard stuff again - exploring farther out, establishing a moon base, etc.

Good points your making. I guess the other problem i have with the "colonize mars" hype is that its just another symptom of our throw away culture. We could focus on fixing the environment....orrrr we could just dump all that money into going to mars

    Many things.
Here is one you probably can see it's value.
They are one step closer to printing human organs in space. That's right.
In the future you could order a liver, kidney or whatever and have it delivered Amazon Prime made specifically for you.

Yeah, I'm with ya there. I think inhabiting mars is a pipe dream. But I'm still all for trying. The more we learn about surviving that environment, the more we can learn about unfucking our own.
